Make a Child’s Peasant Dress in 7 Steps
If you like to sew, reduce the amount of time you spend whipping up your girl's peasant dress by using a nightgown pattern! Share your interest in sewing with your princess while you produce an adorable costume that’s a perfect fit.
1. Check with whomever is in charge of planning the event if your only notice is your youngster's verbal request for a costume. Ask the event's producer if there's a color palette you're required to follow for the peasant dresses so you don't make a blue frock when everyone else is wearing pink.
2. Head for your local sewing or craft store with the child so she has some input on the pattern and fabric you select. Peruse costume and nightgown patterns (you read that right) to locate one that requires the least amount of time to fabricate.
3. Read pattern envelope instructions to determine how much cloth you'll need, basing your choice on the weather. Sure, Renaissance wenches wore heavy velvet back in the day but velvet in July can turn a fun pageant into a costume nightmare. Ask the store clerk to cut fabric that matches your child's size and height if you're concerned about having enough material and match up thread and trim while the textile is in your hands.
4. Prepare your work area. Spread out the fabric, attach pattern pieces to the cloth with straight pins and use pinking shears to cut out sections of the costume. This is particularly important if you're working with cloth that frays easily when cut. Iron the sections. Join the front and back sections of the peasant dress at the shoulder and side seams.
5. Depend upon elastic to shape the costume. Most easy-to-sew peasant dress designs have no need for zippers as the style slides over the child's head and relies upon elastic to shape the costume's silhouette. Gather the sleeves and sew the sleeve seams before insetting each into an armhole, pinning it in place and joining the sleeves and bodice.
6. Create a gathered neckline and sleeve hems. Cut lengths of ribbon or elastic to these specifications: measure your child's chest and add two inches for the neckline if you're using elastic; add 12-inches if you're feeding ribbons into the neckline hem. Measure the child's wrist and add one inch for elastic and six inches for ribbons.
7. Make the peasant dress look festive by feeding more than one color of ribbon through the neckline and wrist channels. Trim the child's peasant dress to make it as fanciful as either of you wishes: faux gems, glittery attachments, sequins, feathers and fabric glitter are all terrific options.
