A Guide to Chriopractic Therapy

Chiropractic therapy is one of the most used CAM procedures in the US. It is a medical approach that believes that there is strong correlation between the body's structure and its functioning.

While some chiropractic techniques have been around sense ancient times, modern day chiropractic begin in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, a self taught healer. He believed the body's natural flow of energy was blocked due to misalignment in the nervous system, particularly spinal chord. He believed this energy flow was important to the body being able to maintain its health and by manipulating the spine it would restore the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Basic Tenets of ChiropracticTherapy

Chiropractic therapy is based on three key concepts:

1. The body has a very powerful ability to heal itself

2. The body's structure is closely related to its functioning and this relationship has an affect on the body's overall health.

3. Treatment focuses on correcting the body's function and structure and restoring the body's ability to heal itself

While Chiropractic focuses mainly on realignment of the spine, chiropractors will use spine adjustments in combination with other forms of therapy such as:

• Rest

• Counseling on lifestyle factors

• Heat and ice

• Rehabilitative exercise

• Electrical stimulation

• Dietary supplements

Treatable Ailments

People use chiropractic for a variety of ailments. The most common reasons for people visiting chiropractors include:

• Chronic pain related health issues

• Lower-back pain

• Neck pain

• Headache

Risks

Side effects and risks are minimal with chiropractic. They generally are based on the type of chiropractic treatment used and can include:

• Soreness

• Headache

• Tiredness

• Discomfort I the parts of the body that were treated

More serious complications, such as stroke, are extremely rare and are based on the part of the body that's being manipulated.

Costs

Costs of chiropractic vary from practitioner to practitioner. Like acupuncture the initial costs of treatment will be more expensive and more comprehensive then what would be needed to maintain health. Also similar to acupuncture, sessions can be bought in a package, which could bring the overall cost of treatment down substantially.

Unlike many other CAM treatments, chiropractic treatments may be extensively covered by insurance. From HMO's to Medicare most medical insurers offer some for of coverage of chiropractic care. Check with your insurer before under going any chiropractic treatments to see which ones they cover.
