Steroid Use Among Teens May Be Caused by Laziness, Not Desperation
New research indicates that as many as one in twenty teenagers may be taking illegal anabolic steroids, with many more using over-the-counter supplements like creatine. Why the increasing use of such physicality-enhancers?
While some theorize that a competition-obsessed society is to blame, I question whether that is accurate or simply a politically correct answer that oversimplifies things and allows us to avoid deeper questions. Certainly, some teens simply want to look good and resemble their heroes from literature, movies, and comic books and worry that flabby bellies and untoned arms will limit their pursuit of social acceptance. High school athletes may be desperate for reputation on the gridiron, popularity among peers, or a shot at a college scholarship. Rising college tuition may influence some teenage athletes to take big risks to up their game.
But might teen work ethic be worthy of scrutiny in our pursuit of steroid answers? We want to say that our nation's kids are driven to the pill or needle by a desperate need to fit in or handle tough competition. Is that fair, though? Are we cutting kids too much slack by assuming that they have a desperate need to do this? As a high school teacher I see and hear lots of idle talk about performance enhancers, usually energy drinks, but little talk of genuine effort in an endeavor.
It's a sad commentary, but many of the teens I see want to get by with a minimum amount of effort. Could this laziness, rather than desperation, be the driving force? Athletes and other teens want top performance during game time but do not want to suffer through the effort of practice or study. Many students seem to revel in being able to do well without expending much effort. "Talented but Lazy" T-shirts proliferate the hallways. Why do we ignore these unpleasantries and focus on how allegedly difficult it is to succeed in today's high schools? Based on the pressure I've come under as a teacher to boost grades, it's definitely not hard for kids to pass.
