What Are the Major Differences Between Different Versions of Windows?

A detailed guide outlining important operating system differences between Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Given the fact that Windows XP still has 46%i of the operating system market share, many people may be wondering, what are the differences found in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or even Windows 8 Consumer-preview.

Before we get into that, let's backtrack for a moment because Windows is not just an operating system. A computer system can be broken down into four layers: hardware, operating system, software and end-user. Each layer interacts with the layer next to it. Windows has always bundled its operating systems with extra software that really does not have anything to do with what an operating system is supposed to do. Dictionary.com defines an operating system as follows "the collection of software that directs a computer's operations, controlling and scheduling the execution of other programs, and managing storage, input/output, and communication resources. "ii What made windows XP such a significant upgrade over prior versions, is that as an operating system, it was finally was able to reliably perform its role of "directing a computer's operations, controlling and scheduling the execution of other programs." Aside from that, people have always had the option to install new software that would add to the user experience. Many of the new "OS" features offered by Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 are things that could be installed on Windows XP with software developed by third-parties.

A big part of the stability that came with Windows XP was due to tighter security on how an end-user could interact with the software and tighter security with how the software could use the services provided by Windows. Security has continued to improve with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but since that mostly happens in the background, you really have to go out of your away to look for enhancements in the newer operating systems. In fact, it would seem that even Microsoft struggles with explaining why upgrading to Windows 7 is worth the hassle. Anyone who is proficient with using Windows XP knows that just about every item on Microsoft's list of top 10 reasons for buying Windows 7 is nothing that cannot already be done in XP.

Since Microsoft's top reasons for upgrading to Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 for that matter are filled with things that very noteworthy, I have come up with my own list:

Windows Vista

Bitlocker - New feature available on Vista Business and Ultimate that allows the hard drive to be encrypted. If a computer such as a laptop is lost or stolen, locally stored documents are not compromised.

Readyboost - New feature introduced that allows Windows to use a USB drive instead of your hard when RAM starts to get low. The maximum amount of memory that you use can through readyboost on Vista is 4GBiii.

User Account Control - When this feature is enabled, it is more difficult for programs that can damage your computer to run without your knowledge.

Windows Experience Index - This new feature will run benchmarks on your system hardware and attempt to give you an objective performance overview from the point of view of Windows. Although other benchmark programs have existed for years, this one is noteworthy because of its vantage point.

There are also some changes that matter to systems administrators:

800 More Group Policies - According to a Technet article titled "More Powerful Group Policy in Windows Vista," there are over 800 new group policies that were introduced as well as language neutral ADMX templates.

Windows 7

Readyboost - Readyboost has been improved to allow for a maximum of 256GB of memory that can be used across 8 USB drives.

Bitlocker To Go - Bitlocker was extended to allow USB drive encryption.

Changes that matter to systems administrators:

Bitlocker - New group policy management feature that allows recovery keys to be stored a the domain controller. Hard drive encryption can now be performed in a few simple clicks compared to manually repartitioning the drive after installing vista before the feature could be enabled.

Direct Access - Direct access allows users to stay connected to the corporate network seamlessly while away from the office. Direct access is transparent to the user and does not require any action on their part as is the case with VPN programs for example.

Startup Repair - Windows 7 comes with the Windows memory diagnostic tool which can be useful to check if a computer is malfunctioning due to bad memory. It also has other options, but most techs would probably prefer to re-image instead. If you would like to see the full list of options, click here.

Windows Experience Index - The benchmark algorithms used have been changed to theoretically give users a better idea about how good a job their hardware is going at running Windows.

Windows 8

Metro Interface - The initial user interface looks similar to what you would expect in a cellphone operating system. It even includes native support for 3G/4G. However, you still have the option of a Windows 7 style desktop.

Tablet Editions - Custom versions of Windows 8 are rumored to be developed that are optimized to run on specialized devices such as tablets.

Windows To Go - Allows users to boot to a USB drive on a non-corporate computer and start a session with a virtual machine that has a corporate image. Once the user is done, the person simply removes the USB drive and restarts the computer again to go back to its original configuration.

There are number of features that I have intentionally omitted from this list because they are not functions that are handled more efficiently when bundled with an operating system. For example, in Windows 7, WordPad was updated to allow users to save in the .docx format which is compatible with Microsoft Word. Although this might be a useful feature for many, it's not a true operating system function. There are also free alternatives to word editing such as Google Docs, Libre Office and Open Office.

For information about features that I left out, please use one of the following links:

Windows 8 -

Windows 7 -

Windows Vista -

I have made every effort to make sure that the information presented here is correct at the time of publishing. However, I cannot control if Microsoft decides to change the features or requirements of any of these operating systems.
