Volleyball Training: Lower Body Stretches

Overall flexibility and strength are huge assets to a good volleyball player. Your muscles need to be flexible to help prevent injury. Flexibility also helps with speed and execution on the court.

Stand up straight with your feet shoulder width apart, toes pointing forward. Let your arms relax on each side of your body. Gently roll your shoulders back so that your spine and neck are straight. Take a few gentle breaths. This is start position.

Inhale deeply and raise your arms above your head. Exhale, bend at the waist and bring your hands to the floor. If you can't reach the floor, bend as far as you comfortably can while still feeling the stretch. Hold for five seconds. Then return to start position. Repeat.

Next, take a step forward with your left leg. Bend your left knee so that it is directly over your left ankle. Keep your toes pointed forward, right leg straight. Now, bend at the waist and place one hand on each side of your left foot. Hold for five seconds. Return to start position. Repeat the same with your right leg forward then return to start.

Shift your weight to your left leg. Bend your right knee so that your right foot is behind you. Grasp your right foot around your toes with your right hand and pull gently toward your back. You should feel the stretch in your quadriceps, above your knee. Your right knee should be pointing straight to the floor. Keep a steady, balanced stance. Hold for five seconds. Return to start and repeat for the left leg.

Now, sit on the floor with your legs stretched out straight in front of you, toes up with feet together. Stabilize your self by putting your hands palms down on the floor beside your hips. Bend your right leg and place your right foot on the outside of your left knee. Next, straighten your left arm and place your elbow on top of your right leg just below the knee. Gently press against your leg with your elbow. Place your right hand palm down behind you. Gently turn your spine and look over your right shoulder. Hold for five seconds. Repeat for the other side.

These are some lower body stretches you can use to prepare for volleyball. Remember never force a stretch. You should be able to feel the stretch and comfortably hold it for 5 seconds.
