PA Speakers for Coffee Shop Size Rooms

We will take a look at small portable PA systems that are great for coffee shop type venues.

For starters, if you do not need a PA system for your performance then by all means, don't take one. The absolute worst thing you can do is go into a very small room and place loud speakers right in someone's ears and painfully bang out songs from 4 or 5 feet away. If you can get by without the system you save money, time and effort. You stand to make more money for the gig if your overhead is slim. The decision should weigh heavily on the size of the room and the environment. A noisy bar in a large restaurant more than likely will need something to amplify the voices. If you are in a coffee shop where the noise is minimal and the crowd is quiet then just take the guitar.

Now that you have made a decision on whether or not to bring one, lets look at the options for small venue sound applications. There are options that are simple and compact such as Fender's Passport series, Yamaha's Stage Pass series, Peavey's Escort and Messenger systems, Bose L1 system, Behringer's EUROPORT system and there are several others. When you start comparing these systems you will find price differences from $300 up to over $1000. The best guideline for deciding which system is that you get what you pay for. The Fender Passport type system is very compact and portable. The speakers connect to the mixer and form a small case that can easily be carried by one hand and it contains everything that you need inside. Just carry it in and set the speakers out and plug in your mic. However, there are downsides. These systems lack quality sound and good volume. Volume typically is not a problem in these small venues but you may want to crank it up for a noisy crowd. Also, the coverage, or you will see the specification listed as "nominal coverage" plays an important role. You want everyone to hear the same from one corner of the room to the other. The cheaper systems have a very tight pattern so you only hear the full range of the speaker when you are sitting directly in front of them. On some of the more expensive systems, the coverage pattern is as high as 180 degrees. 70 degrees is typical in many loudspeakers. Anything higher is of course better. The Bose L1 system is the most impressive sound and it easily fills a room with only one tower. The system sounds better with the optional sub but that adds to the already high price. The quality of sound from the L1 leaves the others listed far behind. They offer options such as controllers that can be mounted on a mic stand. The Yamaha Stage Pass system is also a very nice package that has a mixer that fits into the back of one of the speakers. It can be removed and placed by the performer. This system does sound good and can double as monitors in a larger system. However, it too sounds as though it could really use more on the bottom end. As you move down through the price range, the speaker quality and the power goes down. You have to set your budget and then go listen to them to see which one suits you the best.
