Natural Home Cleaning

With the recent economic downturn, many of us are finding it more difficult to create a viable budget when grocery shopping. These simple recipes will save you time, sanity, and most importantly, they will save you money.

In their simplest form, you can use several products around your home as-is for a great cleaning boost. For example, adding half a cup of baking soda to a load of laundry is a great deodorizer, as is sprinkling baking soda on the carpet before you vacuum. The active ingredient in many deodorizing cleaning products is baking soda, and it is for this reason that we often are advised to keep baking soda in the fridge. For cleaning, however, you will want to use a fresh box of baking soda. Washing soda, or sodium carbonate, can be used to remove waxy or greasy buildup, such as lipstick stains and grease marks; for this I would probably wear rubber gloves, as it can strip the natural oils from your hands. Lemon juice and white vinegar can remove hard water stains, buildup, and metal tarnishes. Tea tree oil is great for removing mold and mildew; it is very strong and should be diluted to about half a tablespoon in two cups of water.

One of the essential cleaners we often have under the kitchen sink is the all-purpose cleaner. For a great alternative, mix equal parts vinegar and salt. The vinegar helps to remove buildup, while the salt acts as a mild abrasive to loosen particularly tough spots. This can be used on countertops, bathtubs, heavy linoleum staining, and even cookware. For light cleaning that won't require scrubbing, you can mix two tablespoons of borax, 1/4 cup of lemon juice, and two cups of water.

When cleaning dishes that don't require heavy scrubbing, or when using a dishwasher, you can try mixing one cup of baking soda, one cup of borax, and one cup of water in a sealable jug. You may also want to add a few drops of an essential oil if you're particularly addicted to the scent of commercial products. I usually use about two tablespoons per load and set my dishwasher to use a hot rinse in order to make sure that it does not leave a residue; this isn't a concern if you are washing by hand. If you still have problems with residue, I've found that adding some vinegar during the rinse cycle eliminates this.

If you're like me and you have to share a bathroom with a lot of teenagers and young adults, the grout between bathroom tiles can get stained over time. There are multiple commercial cleaners available and I've even seen people use toothpaste, but these are both way too expensive in my opinion, and grout cleaners often smell foul. I like to mix one part water, three parts baking soda, and a few drops of an essential oil for an effective, pleasant-smelling grout cleaner. This is also a great way to recycle old toothbrushes, as they are the perfect size to get between tiles.

Basic floor cleaning goes no farther than washing soda and vinegar. One cup of washing soda, a gallon of water, and a few teaspoons of vinegar make for an excellent mopping solution. Washing soda removes stains and sanitizes, while the vinegar leaves floors shiny and sparkling. I often find that commercial cleaners can leave my floors looking streaky or with a grimy layer of buildup; not so with washing soda and vinegar.

Many cleaners for wood floors, tables, and shelving can also leave behind a greasy layer of buildup. Instead of using the traditional oil soaps, I like to mix a cup of lemon juice (to remove dirt), a tablespoon of olive oil (to condition the wood), and a tablespoon of water for a basic furniture polish. For cleaning a hardwood floor, I use one cup of lemon juice, two tablespoons of olive oil, and a gallon of water.

For cleaning glass, I was taught this wonderful trick when I was a very small child. 1/4 cup white vinegar, a tablespoon of cornstarch, and a quart of water mixed in a spray bottle make an excellent cleaning solution. The real beauty to this trick, however, lies in the material used to wipe away the cleaning solution: newspaper. It leaves an absolutely beautiful, streak-free shine that you cannot get with any cleaning cloth or wipe, and it's a great way to recycle newspapers. (I am also an advocate of lining animal cages with newspaper, although these will need to be changed daily).

Sometimes, when we wash our clothes we need to pretreat a particularly nasty stain. For this, I usually fill up a sealable glass jug about halfway with chunks of soap, anything from hotel soaps to cut-up bars of cheap Ivory to the leftover slivers when a bar of soap is on its last legs. Then, I fill the jug with boiling water and mix until the soap is dissolved; the resulting jelly mixture can be rubbed into a stain and the garment can be thrown into the wash pile. For blood stains, hydrogen peroxide can be used. For grass stains, vinegar can be used.

Finally, laundry detergent, one of the most wasteful products I see in stores. A particular favorite alternative of mine calls for one cup of vinegar, one cup of baking soda, one cup of washing soda, and 1/4 cup liquid castile soap. I also like to add about ten to fifteen drops of an essential oil to this mixture. At first, this mixture is a thick paste, but you should keep stirring until it breaks down into a powder. Before using, break up any heavy clumps. Mix 1/2 cup of the powder with the water at the bottom of your washing machine before adding your clothes.

Most of these ingredients can be found at any store. Vinegar, corn starch, olive oil, lemon juice, and baking soda are easy to find. Washing soda and borax can usually be found in the washing aisle. Castile soap is usually found with the natural products, as are essential oils. Happy cleaning, and good luck with saving money!
