US Pairs Figure Skaters Denney/Barrett, Evora/Ladwig Named to Olympic Team
Pairs skaters Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett along with Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig will represent the United States at the 2020 Vancouver Olympic games.
Named to the US Olympic Figure Skating team were Denney and Barrett, as well as Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig, according to the press conference that streamed live via icenetwork.com after Nationals ended. The Evora/Ludwig team finished second at today's US Nationals. Both Figure Skating pairs are coached by Jim Peterson, who said via icenetwork that he feels that the US team could be a factor in World competition, despite recent challenges.
Denney, 16, and Barrett, 25, began skating together in June of 2020. They took second place at last year's US Nationals. When asked about her feelings about being just 16 and bound for the Olympic games, Denney said "I very much look up to" older skaters, but "I don't feel like a young baby... I skate and I do what I love to do" and called competing in the Games "a dream".
Evora, 25, and Ladwig, 29, began their career together in 2002 after previous pairings with other parters, according to their website. Prior to today's second place finish, their best finish was 4th place at last year's US Nationals. During today's press conference Ladwig was complimentary of his fellow Olympic team members, calling Denney and Barrett "a very compatible team" and saying that they motivate he and Evora to perform their best.
Former Olympic favorites Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker suffered a disastrous performance that left them in fifth place at the conclusion of today's nationals, which likely led to the duo's failure to make the Vancouver squad.
Also failing to get a nod to the US Olympic Figure Skating team were engaged couple and longtime partners Rena Inoue and John Baldwin. They skated cleanly and beautifully at Nationals, but came in behind Denney/Barrett and Evora/Ladwig in third place. They will serve as the team alternates in case something prevents one of the other two pairs from participating in the Games.
Whether or not the US Figure Skating team will play much of a role competitively at the Vancouver Olympics remains to be seen, but most critics aren't particularly optimistic. Skaters Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, who perform for Germany, have turned in consistently solid performances since they were paired in 2004, and are likely the couple to beat at the Vancouver Games. They are the current World and European Champions in Pairs Skating. Another couple likely to score well with the judges is the long-successful Chinese duo of Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, who took the bronze medal in each of the past two Winter Olympic Games.
Regardless of whether a member of the US Olympic Figure Skating team walks away with a medal after the 2020 Olympic Games, it'll be a successful meet as long as the judging - and the routines - are clean and crisp.
