Studying for Standardized Tests
A quick review of a few study guides for tests such as the SAT and the ACT
To start off, I strongly advise taking advantage of al the free study material offered by both collegeboard (the group that owns the SAT) and ACT.org. Collegeboard has an "SAT question of the day" that students can sign up for and have it delivered daily to their email accounts. Also, collegeboard allows its users to take a free practice test offered at their website online. ACT.org also offers a few free practice sessions for the various sections of the ACT exam.
In addition to the free materials, I chose to study with a few other tests guides the collegeboard itself put out. I ordered the Official SAT Study Guide, which provided an overview of each section in the test and practice questions for them. There are also a few practice tests in the back of the book, which I found very useful in putting me into the "sit down for hours at a time and take a test" mode. However, in order to supplement and enhance my SAT study process, I chose also to subscribe to collegeboard's SAT online study guide. Although the price tag on this online preparation course may turn many test takers away, I found it entirely worth it. The online course not only offered a vast amount of sample questions and review material, but it also offered explanations for all of the answers to the practice test questions. Another advantage of the online course was found in the essay preparation section of it, which allowed for users to type in an essay on the prompt and a program would grade it. Although the scoring system was certainly not the same as an actual human reading and grading the essay, it did give users feedback as to what their possible essay score might be.
I also used some material straight from ACT in order to study for their standardized exam. I found the Real ACT Study Guide to be a very helpful book, at a very affordable price. It also had a few practice ACT tests in the back of the book, with explanations to each of the test questions. However, I chose to review a bit with the Princeton Review's ACT study guide in addition to the Real ACT Study Guide published by the ACT organization itself. This was perhaps one of my favorite study guides. Although the actual material covered was quite similar to that covered in other guides, the manner in which it was written was quite enjoyable.
There are certainly a plethora of study guides for standardized tests and being aware of what each one has to offer is an advantage.
