Poker Comment - Playing the Man Leaves Hand Strength Behind

James' articulation in the face of such theft is commendable, although the Reading Eagle's report doesn't actually say if he was being physically restrained as he spoke...

"He put $19,000 or $20,000 at risk with jack-high. That's what we're battling today. He said it was easy because the board read 8-9-5-6, so he knew that unless I had a 7, I couldn't call. I could've had A-7. It takes a lot of courage to make that play. That's a 22-year-old kid playing poker today."

In one sense, of course, this is wonderful news. All the wiles and manoeuvres of a seasoned veteran can still count for nothing, if those two cards in front of the ordinary Joe opposite just happen to make the better hand.

This is what sustains poker's ongoing renaissance, the NFL-style concept that on any given day, David can take Goliath.

Where it leaves all those how-to books we absorb in a bid to help the process along, however, is a different matter. We all know the basic principles of hand-strength must be flexible to a degree if we are not to become expensively predictable at the table but for those who aspire to take on the big boys one day, pure play poker suddenly looks flat-footed and vulnerable against the kind of suicide jockey that left James shaking his head.

"Even as an old-timer, I raised before the flop, bet on the flop, check-raised on the turn to validate it and bet out strong on the river - showed no sign of weakness - and this kid was still able to take it away from me with jack-high," he lamented.

"Poker today is any way to win a pot. The game is elevating and you have to elevate with it."

Hold that penultimate sentence, because the key to the 'elevation' of which James speaks lies within. Any way to win a pot.

Welsh pro John Tabatabai has looked at uber-aggression for Poker Player magazine, explaining that while successful tournament players once waited for made hands before going on the offensive, they now take a drawing hand or dangerous board as their cue to press but only if they think they are up against the kind of player likely to be impressed by a bluff.

That is the rationale underlying what otherwise looks like kamikaze poker. Its exponents are playing the man, not the cards.

"There are loads of aggressive players who can keep firing but it's not just about your ability to do that," says Tabatabai. "it's all about picking the right opponents to put pressure on. That involves knowing as much about their style of play as possible and how likely it is that they'll call you down."

What looks like insane raising wars, he adds, are often just experienced players taking advantage of what they've learnt of an opponent's thinking and betting patterns from previous showdowns.

At the game's more exalted levels, this can involve psychological smoke and mirrors to the nth degree but those of us in the foothills can at least start preparing to join them.

To do so, however, involves widening our own definition of a 'live' hand, not by pressing marginal cards but by accepting that if a hand isn't a money-making opportunity, then it's a learning opportunity. As Tabatabai notes, too many players fool themselves about the level of study they apply to a hand in which they are no longer involved.

There's a wealth of information to be gleaned from hands that go to showdown. If we're too busy grumbling about cold decks to notice it, then we deserve everything we get when the guy with 72o persuades us that he just rivered an ace-high straight.
