How to Get a Lower Back Workout
Learn how to get a safe and effective workout that will not only strengthen lower back muscles, but increase flexibility.
A healthy balance between strength and flexibility is important in regards to the lower back, so start by including a pelvic tilt in your workout; it will not only strengthen those lower back muscles, but will also lengthen them which improves flexibility. To do the pelvic tilt, lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Your feet should be about hip width apart, and your arms should be wherever they are comfortable. Begin with your pelvis level and a natural curve in your spine, and then on an exhale draw your abdominal muscles in toward your spine. Next, you'll want to gently press your back down and tilt your pelvis upward. As you inhale, return your pelvis to a normal position. Make sure that you keep your head, shoulders, and neck relaxed during this exercise.
An easier option is the chair tilt; simply follow the instructions above, but place your feet on a chair instead of on the floor. Or, if you need a harder workout, try the bridge tilt: At the height of your pelvic tilt, you will want to continue peeling your spine off of the floor until only your feet and shoulders are left on the floor. A word of caution: If you're doing the bridge tilt, work hard to keep your abdominal muscles tucked in, or else your back will sag. (This can cause serious injury!)
When training your lower back, there a couple of common mistakes that you should strive to avoid. The first is bending too far back on back extensions. You'll want to raise your body just a few inches while lengthening out. The second mistake that you must avoid to prevent injury is performing back injuries too quickly. You'll want to perform lower back exercises slowly and carefully to maximize the isolation of the lower back muscles that you are attempting to train.
Remember that when working your lower back muscles, you should feel a mild pull or pressure building within the muscle rather than a sharp pain. If you feel a piercing pain, you need to stop immediately, and consult a physician before continuing.
A dull ache in the back is quite normal for a day or two after you have worked your lower back...It's simply your body's way of telling you that you accomplished your goal. If you have back problems to begin with, you'll want to consult a doctor before beginning any new workout program. Take your time, and remember not to push too hard, and you'll increase your strength and flexibility.
