Thirty Movies to Watch Before the 2020 Oscars (Part One)
If you want the edge on your office pool, start watching these releases now, because you’ve got a lot of catching up to do
With the announcement of the Golden Globes nominations occurring this week, the countdown to next month's revelation of the Oscar nominations officially begins. So if you're one of the millions of people who love playing the Academy Awards home game by predicting (and second-guessing) the nominations, then it's time to start doing your homework. Some movies with big Oscar potential are already on video, others are in theaters right now, and a handful will hit the big screen over the next month. Here are the movies you should try to see, and why.
1. Albert Nobbs. Glenn Close has been nominated for acting Oscars five times in the past, and she's almost certain to land a sixth nod for her turn as a woman who poses as a man in order to earn a living as a servant in 19th-century Ireland. Another performance to watch is that of past Oscar nominee Janet McTeer, who appears in a supporting role as a fellow cross-dresser.
2. The Artist. It's French. It's in black and white. And it's silent. But The Artist is also the feel-good hit of the year, at least on the arthouse circuit, because it's a romantic celebration of the power of movies. See it now, before the lines form when it scores almost-inevitable nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and (possibly) Best Actor, for charming Gallic cinema star Jean Dujardin.
3. Bridesmaids. The summertime hit is unlikely to be a major contender in the acting or directing categories, although a nod for the script (cowritten by leading lady Kristin Wiig) would not be a complete shocker. Furthermore, there's a groundswell of support for costar Melissa McCarthy, soaring after an Emmy win for her series Mike amp; Molly. Oddly, the movie's best chance is in the big race, for Best Picture, since the Academy may nominate as many as 10 films for Best Picture this year, allowing mainstream fare to enjoy recognition along more serious-minded Oscar-bait.
4. A Dangerous Method. An early contender that lost much of its momentum, this sexually charged drama about real-life shrinks Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud should not be ruled out, given the sterling reputation of director David Cronenberg, and costar Michael Fassbender might get a nomination for this one in recognition of his breakthrough year, since his other big movie, Shame, will probably seem too provocative for traditionally uptight Oscar voters.
5. The Descendants. A virtual lock for nods in the Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay races, Alexander Payne's beautifully observed dramedy about a man learning the true nature of his comatose wife features a career-high leading performance by George Clooney, the actor to beat in this year's Best Actor derby.
6. Drive. An indie movie that might be too small and edgy to appear on Oscar's radar, this crime thriller about a driver navigating the Los Angeles underworld features a celebrated supporting performance by funnyman Albert Brooks, who plays a sadistic criminal. Brooks could score a Best Supporting Actor nod, and if other major contenders fail to curry enough favor, leading man Ryan Gosling could squeak into the Best Actor race.
7. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. One of the big unknowns of this year's Oscar-friendly releases, this 9/11-themed drama starring the Academy Award-winning duo of Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks was completed so late that it barely got seen by most of the major critics' groups, and it hasn't appeared on many best-of lists thus far. However, director Stephen Daldry's last two pictures (The Hours and The Reader) were both nominated for Best Picture prizes, so his streak could continue.
8. 50/50. A lightweight movie about a heavy subject, this comedic spin on writer Will Reiser's real-life experience with cancer has good-but-not-great shots in two categories: Best Actor, for Joseph Gordon-Levitt (since playing a diseased character is the quickest route to a nomination) and Best Screenplay (since Reiser's triumph over cancer makes him an offscreen hero). Furthermore, the formidable Angelica Huston is a dark horse in the Best Supporting Actress race for her solid work as the mom of a cancer-stricken adult son.
9. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Director David Fincher is an automatic Oscar contender after last year's The Social Network, and he's way overdue for a prize as Best Director. However, this adaptation of the bestselling thriller might be too commercial and too nasty for Oscar consideration. In other words, the picture could land several splashy nominations only to falter once actual prizes are distributed.
10. The Help. The real question isn't whether The Help will do well come nomination time, but how many nominations it will receive. A Best Picture nod is certain for this crowd-pleaser about black servants in the Civil Rights-era South, and first-time writer-director Tate Taylor shouldn't be surprised if he gets nominated for either Best Director or Best Adapted Screenplay. However, it's the cast of the movie that should warm up their voices for nomination-day interviews. Viola Davis could land in either the Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress categories, and Octavia Spencer is the front-runner for this year's Best Supporting Actress prize. Jessica Chastain, Sissy Spacek, and Emma Stone could get Oscar love as well, depending on how wide a swath this movie cuts through the female acting categories.
11. Hugo. Since director Martin Scorsese enjoys living-legend status, and since Hugo has gained major momentum in early critics' prizes, expect a boatload of nominations for this big-budget 3D adaptation of Brian Selznick's popular children's book. However, don't be surprised if the picture only wins in technical categories, because its narrative simply isn't as potent as its whiz-bang visuals.
12. The Ides of March. Though it should have been a major factor in awards season given its high-voltage cast, George Clooney's directorial effort has mostly fizzled, with attention for Clooney going toward The Descendants and praise for leading man Ryan Gosling directed at Drive. This is a shame, for while The Ides of March is not the movie it should have been, it's still a worthwhile political drama boasting ace supporting turns by Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Marisa Tomei.
13. The Iron Lady. With 16 Oscar nominations to her credit, Meryl Streep is the most-nominated actor in Academy history. She will almost certainly score a 17th nomination, this time as Best Actress, for her meticulous portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. However, The Iron Lady simply isn't very good, suffering from a lackluster script, so it's not likely to garner many additional nominations except perhaps a supporting nod for the always-great Jim Broadbent, who plays Thatcher's husband.
14. J. Edgar. Clint Eastwood's biopic about infamous FBI strongman J. Edgar Hoover is probably the biggest disappointment of awards season so far, since the movie is flat and uninvolving despite the participation of a powerful creative team. Perfunctory nominations may get bestowed on leading man Leonardo DiCaprio, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (a past Oscar winner, for the infinitely superior Milk), and supporting players Judi Dench and Armie Hammer. Eastwood might even eke out a Best Director nomination simply by dint of his legendary status. But like Hugo, this picture will probably leave the actual Oscar ceremony mostly empty-handed.
15. Like Crazy. One of the year's breakout indies, this intense romance could land a place in the Oscar derby if leading lady Felicity Jones scores a nomination as Best Actress for her raw performance.
