DIY Green Cleaning Products You Can Make for Pennies

One way you can save some green - by being green - is through making your own cleaning products from a few inexpensive ingredients, like vinegar, baking soda, olive oil, lemons and salt. Here are some simple tips and recipes.

With the current economic climate, more people are looking for ways to get by on less money. And one place where you can save some green - by being green - is through making your own cleaning products from a few inexpensive ingredients.

Do-it-yourself advocates say that with distilled white vinegar, baking soda, olive oil, lemons, salt, cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide, you can replace a whole cabinet full of store-bought cleaning products with homemade ones that cost little and are non-toxic.

"I personally am very happy with them," said Megan Tolbert, director of Monterey Green Action, a grassroots organization which promotes environmental responsible living in Monterey, California. She's been making her own cleansers for the past three years, as well as her own laundry detergent and flea remedies for her dog.

Tolbert said her homemade products clean just as well as the ones you buy in a store, and without any harsh chemical effects that result from using such things as chlorine bleach and ammonia.

Consider, for a moment, ordinary white vinegar. By itself, it will do everything from clean your windows to unclog your showerhead, because its key ingredient is acetic acid. The mild effect of this acid helps scour away soap scum and stains without damage. Also on the plus side is that vinegar is cheap and readily available.

Be sure to use distilled white vinegar, and not cider, wine or rice vinegars, which are meant best kept for cooking purposes.

You can keep two spray bottles on hand - one with 100 percent vinegar and the other with a half-water, half-vinegar solution - to cover most cleaning needs, according to Noel-Marie Taylor, who shares natural household tips on her Web site, The New Homemaker.

Having these handy will take care of such tasks as kitchen and bathroom cleanup, and keep them available for other uses as well.

Vinegar and vinegar solutions can replace cleaning products such as 409, Clorox Wipes and Windex; since vinegar is also a good antiseptic, it will eliminate germs. Numerous studies cited by Michael Mullen of the Heinz Company have shown that a 5% solution of vinegar kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold, and 80 percent of viruses.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive, and so can substitute for household cleansers like Soft Scrub or Ajax. It's also handy for reducing odors and for whitening laundry, and some people like to brush their teeth with it as well.

Lemon juice is also a mild acid that can be used for cleaning, and also is effective as a deodorizer.

Olive oil (and other natural oils, such as almond oil) can be used in place of store-bought furniture polish.

Tolbert also notes that adding essential oils to her cleaners can release delightful scents into the home as well, and recommends that those who are interested can glean recipes from the Internet and books such as "The Naturally Clean Home" by Karyn Siegel-Maier.

She also highly recommends seeking out borax, a product that has a variety of uses for cleaning, and also can prevent ants and other insects from entering a home if sprinkled around the foundation.

"Any grocery store would have it, and also Target, although sometimes it's on the very top or the bottom shelf, and you have to look for it," said Tolbert.

Simple recipes for cleaners can also be found at two local Web sites. At the Citizens for a Sustainable Monterey County site, there is a long list of recipes and tips; another handy, although shorter, list can be found at the City of Monterey Web site.

Tips from the City of Monterey Web site,

Use Worcestershire sauce to polish brass, and lemon juice with salt to polish copper.

To remove decals, soak in white vinegar.

Equal parts of vinegar and salt will remove mildew.

Combine 1 cup vinegar with two gallons of water to clean linoleum.

Hot vinegar will soften a paintbrush.

To remove tea or coffee stains from cups, use moist salt or vinegar.

Tips from the Citizens for a Sustainable Monterey County Web site,

A cloth soaked in vinegar can remove hard water stains, if left to sit for a while on the stained area.

Unclog a drain by mixing a handful of baking soda in a cup of vinegar, and pouring down the drain. Rinse with hot water.

Disinfect wood cutting boards with full strength vinegar.

Clean grout stains with hydrogen peroxide or borax.

Clean a refrigerator or wipe off oven grease with equal parts water and vinegar. A vinegar-dampened cloth will shine stainless steel, and undiluted vinegar is a good window cleaner.

Sprinkle baking soda on burned-on food in a pan, cover with water, and soak.

Adding 1 cup of vinegar to a load of laundry will clean hoses and eliminate soap scum inside the machine. This is also said to soften clothes and to prevent lint from clinging.

Clean a steam iron using equal amounts of vinegar and water in the water chamber. Turn to steam, leave in upright position for 5 minutes. Unplug, allow to cool and loose particles will come out when you empty the water.

Lift stains from clothing by applying white vinegar and rubbing, or a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice. (It's best to check fabric for colorfastness first.) Launder as usual.

Add baking soda to the water in the washing machine and let it dissolve before you add detergent to soften your clothes and give your detergent an extra boost of cleaning power. Add baking soda to the rinse cycle to deodorize clothing.

Add a cup of hydrogen peroxide, instead of bleach, to a load of whites.

Pour hydrogen peroxide directly on blood stains. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Sprinkle baking soda around the inside of a toilet bowl and then clean with a toilet brush. Use vinegar for stubborn stains.

Mix 1 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup borax to clean and deodorize a sink.

Remove soap buildup from chrome fixtures with 1 teaspoon salt and 2 tablespoons of distilled vinegar.

Corrosion on showerheads can be removed by soaking them in vinegar overnight. Or, pour white vinegar into a plastic bag, tape to the showerhead and leave overnight. Brush the showerhead to remove remaining deposits.

To remove smells caused by cigarettes, cooking and pets, sprinkle baking soda on your carpet or upholstery, wait 15 minutes, and vacuum.

Scrub fireplace bricks with vinegar to remove soot.

Clean piano keys with soft cloth dampened with 1 cup vinegar to 2 cups of water. Wring the cloth practically dry and wipe on keys.
