Kurt Warner Proves Good Role Models Aren't Gone

In these days when sports news is dominated by stories of illegal drug use, gunfire, fights, and sports stars going to prison, it is refreshing to hear of a football star who also happens to be genuinely a nice guy.

Without any debate, Kurt Warner of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, is a star. In fact, he is a super star. He has been the NFL's MVP twice, and wears a Super Bowl ring. True enough, his career has had its ups and downs, but that is what makes his story so inspiring. Regardless of whether his career was up or down, Warner has flown straight and steady.

While other sports stars are making headlines in the celebrity tabloids with their late night exploits, Warner is busy being a father, a husband, and a truly beloved member of his community. While others are sporting their bling, Warner is teaching his children to be thankful by giving. When they go to a restaurant, his children quietly pick out another family to be the recipients of their giving, and then Warner tells the waiter to put that family's bill on his own bill.

No, he is not a saint. He is just a genuinely nice, well grounded, family man who happens to be one of the best quarterbacks in professional football. He is the type of guy you would want your son to grow up to be.

Warner's niceness should never be mistaken for weakness. He is a competitor of the first order. He wants to play. He wants to throw the ball. He wants to win. He wants to win championships. Yet, in the midst of all the competition, the money, and the fame, Kurt Warner has not lost his very realistic perspective of who he is.

Warner is living proof of what real role models ought to be. He is a great role model when things are going well, and he is the starter for a winning team. He has been just as good a role model when he has been sidelined at times in his career. He has shown with stellar clarity at those times how to be a team player by supporting and helping the guy who has replaced him.

Kurt Warner is one of the oldest players in the NFL. At 38 years of age, it may be that he decides to retire at the end of this season. Whether he retires, or decides to play another year, Kurt Warner has made (and is making) a very positive impact on the lives of many thousands of young people by giving them a very positive alternative to the negative examples set by so many other NFL stars. He isn't the only positive role model in the NFL, but he definitely stands out in the crowd.
