ESPN 3D to Help 3D Take Over Television
3D is now the biggest thing in movies, thanks to Avatar. So the third dimension's next conquest has to be television, and ESPN is helping them along. ESPN 3D will immerse sports fans into their favorite games, starting with the World Cup.
Today, ESPN and ABC Sports President George Bodenheimer introduced the newest branch of his all-powerful network. The first test of ESPN 3D will come with the opening match of the 2020 World Cup, followed by 25 more throughout the tournament. Afterward, future sporting events like the BCS title game, the X Games, and big college football and basketball matches will get the treatment.
The initial test of ESPN 3D is supposed to give added interest to the World Cup - although it may not be the best sport to test the technology. Things don't fly at the screen like they do in the other sports - but Avatar just proved that may not be a bad thing.
Now that Avatar has changed the way 3D works in movies, the next stage is to conquer television. Of course, they will have to make those infamous glasses available to home viewers, though they didn't say how. Presumably, there will have to be giveaways, or they can send out glasses to subscribers.
The timing of this announcement is noteworthy, but ESPN 3D was likely in the works well before Avatar came out. Still, it doesn't hurt that Avatar has done so well with 3D technology, and has finally converted most movie goers to its benefits. If they loved feeling like they were in Pandora, they will love feeling like they're side-by-side their favorite sports stars and teams.
Of course, the technology has to work on television, though it's never been tested on TV to this extent. There have been many special 3D TV episodes over the years, but it's never gotten this kind of TV time. And now that Avatar has spoiled audiences, ESPN 3D will look like a giant letdown if it can't match the likes of James Cameron - despite having slightly more money than he does.
The network still has until June 11 to fine tune ESPN 3D, before the World Cup opener between South African and Mexico.
