How to Cut a Mortise

A mortise can be constructed using a plunge-router, router table, hollow-chisel or by hand. The method depends on the equipment available and the comfortability of the individual cutting the mortise.

Constructing a mortise using a router can be done using a spiral upcut bit. The spiral upcut bit sheers the wood efficiently when cutting sideways. It will remove any waste from the mortise. A machinist's end-mill uses the same type of bit. The spiral upcut bit can be purchased from any machinist's supply firm in several sizes.

Cutting a mortise using the plunge-router mortising requires the lay out of the centerline along with the beginning and end of the mortise to be marked. The stock should then be clamped to the mortising jig. Position the stock so the mortising in on edge. Adjust the router fence so the router bit is centered over the stock. The specific distance of the stock should be ½ the diameter of the base of the router from the centerline of the mortise. The use of tock blocks will limit the length of the mortise to ensure each mortise is the same size.

The mortise will need several passes of the router to complete. The first two plunges should be on either end of the mortise. The plunges should be the full depth desired for the mortise. The remaining waste should be removed in several passes. Routing in this manner will ensure an even mortise.

Using a router table to cut a mortise requires marking both the layout of the width and length lines of adjoining faces onto the edges of the stock. Draw the 4-bit location marks on the router table. The marks on the outside of the stock are used to line up the mortise with marks made on the router table. Then place stop blocks on the router table to limit travel of the mortise stock. Raise the bit and drop the stock on top of the bit to cut the mortise.

To cut a mortise with a hallow-chisel requires marking the layout of the mortise. Clamp the stock along the fence. Place the stock hold-down on the wood and clamp. The depth stop should then be adjusted. Cut the mortise by taking several passes over the area.

Cutting a mortise by hand requires marking the width of the mortise with a mortise gauge. Mark the length by using a square and layout knife. Drill out the mortise using a bit the same width as the desired opening. Clean out the mortise and square the ends using a chisel.
