Zambezi Queen River Safari in Southern Africa

Opt out of a land lodge for a stunning river cruise in southern Africa.

The Chobe River in southern Africa is a natural border between Namibia and northern Botswana. It's where I experienced three days of unique adventures on the luxury river boat called the Zambezi Queen.

The Zambezi Queen, a modernized river boat turned luxury liner, cruises the Chobe River each day, dazzling passengers with picture-perfect snapshots -- pods of yawning half-submerged hippos, alligators hunting on the river's banks, ibis soaring in the sky seeking out prey.

An alternative to land lodge accommodations where guests are limited to looking out onto the river, the Zambezi Queen gives passengers a supreme vantage point being on the water. The best spot on the ship is the top deck, which boasts a 360-degree panorama of the two countries split by the shallow Chobe River.

The ship's interior, designed in muted tones to not detract from the outside, offers a homey place to lounge with fawn-colored overstuffed couches set in front of grand open windows, another perfect vantage spot for nature viewing. Fourteen guest rooms created to bring the outside elements in are designed with subtle cremes and tans accented with local African art and faux animal prints. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto private balconies.

Stepping off the boat for adventure and the process of stamp-in/stamp-out for Namibia and Botswana (with the necessary help of Zambezi Queen staff members) makes moving between the two countries for activities such as game viewing at Botswana's Chobe National Park a little convoluted. The reward surely beats out any hassle once inside the park, because it is simply the best animal viewing and the highest concentration of game in Africa.

Thanks to Botswana's anti-poaching laws, an estimated 50,000 elephants roam the 11,700-kilometer grounds with no fear. Never have I experienced so many families of elephant en route to gather water at the river's edge meandering past game vehicles. With nary any other game vehicle in site, we had the park to our own grouping of vehicles to see giraffe , kudus, hippo, and zebra both on the river's banks and on open plains.

Guests can choose from other activities: fly fishing, a game-viewing experience via helicopter, bird watching, and a guided river bank tour with a wilderness expert.
