Learn to Sew and Find Time for Yourself!
The author shares her love of sewing with a touching story about her mother's love of the craft and patience in showing her daughter how to appreciate time alone
The first thing I remember sewing is a doll dress. My mother's sewing room was a plethora of exciting colors and textures that drew me in. I couldn't get enough of the fragrance, the colors, and the feel of the wonderful scraps of fabric that lined her sewing box. I spent hours watching her at the sewing machine, her head bent over her work as the machine whirred along and she created masterpieces of wearable art for my siblings and me. A cup of coffee ever-present, she made use of the minutes wisely - she had little time to herself with four children, a big house, and my father all clamoring for attention. As I look back now I realize that the time spent in the sewing room wasn't just for creating things for us to wear or mending clothes that were still serviceable. I know, instead, it was the precious commodity that we all yearn for (time alone to think). Mom usually sewed after her four darlings were in bed for the night and my father had settled in to read his newspaper. Many a morning I woke to find a brand new dress or outfit hanging on my bedroom door. We wore our mom's creations proudly and were the envy of many of our childhood friends. Funny, we all secretly yearned for store-bought clothes!
I begged to make something myself and mother was pleased, I could tell. I was about five at the time and she handed me two squares of fabric and a big needle and thread. She showed me how to thread the needle myself and how to take some stitches to hold the pieces of material together. I was hooked from the first stitch.
"Look, mom," I remember saying proudly as I held my project up for her to inspect.
"Very pretty dear," she replied, "but let's take it out and start over - you see, this corner is a little crooked."
Strangely enough, I never minded ripping out the stitches I put in, probably because mom was so patient with me and I had watched her do the same thing herself. She made sure I knew that a good job is one done well, even if it meant redoing it over. I learned to take my time and not fret if I had to take the stitching out and start again. Later I graduated to the sewing machine, but to this day I have a love of hand sewing that began at my mother's knee. It's the reason enjoy sewing today.
As I escape the stressful, day-to-day world I live in, my sewing room is a safe haven. While I sew I hash out problems that need solving, listen to books on tape to expand my knowledge or let my mind rest. While I remove stitches I design embellishments for the project, figure out ways I can change the pattern, or plot my next novel.
I've come a long way from that initial doll dress and I have my mother to thank for my love of sewing. I have spent countless hours of relaxing in a peaceful room that reminds me of my childhood, creating works of art that would make my mother proud!
