Fears for Artie Lange's Life
Comedian's long admitted addiction to drugs may sadly finally be getting the best of him.
Lange had not been on the Stern show for several weeks and has battled serious drug problems, including cocaine and heroin, for years. His drug use, combined with his weight, have caused his friends and fans to worry about him for a several years.
While on paper, Lange's latest problems should not be shocking, somehow it still is to fans and observers of the Stern show. What might be the the most unusual aspects to Lange, his drug use and hospitalization are the candor and humor he has consistently displayed in addressing his drug abuse through the years.
Despite his juvenile humor, most fans sensed a degree of intelligence and self awareness in Lange that are often concealed with serious drug addicts. To my ears, it always has somehow seemed that Lange, who clearly realizes he had a serious problem, would eventually stop and straighten himself out. Of course, deep addiction defies logic in most all cases and even though Lange seems to know that he was headed into very dangerous territory, this latest development suggests that perhaps he has not.
While one must be careful in assuming anything when it comes to health, Lange's behavior in recent weeks have been pointing towards trouble. In addition to going on leave from the Stern show, Lange has canceled several stand up comedian appearances throughout December and into the New Year. If there were a simple explanation for all of this, one has to assume that it would have been given by now. And now as he is hospitalized with no details forthcoming, fans are fearing the worst.
In 2020, Lange made headlines when he appeared on the first episode of the Joe Buck Show and proceeded to deliver a profane and homophobic tirade that seemed at times to not be as funny as most have come to expect from Lange. On some level, the appearance seemed forced and to some listening, a cry for help on some level.
If Artie Lange is fighting for his life tonight, this fan hopes that he will not only survive, but use this incident as the 'rock bottom' mark before getting healthy and straightening himself out.
