4 Atypical Finds on Netflix that Turned Out to Be Gems

World War II, action adventure movies, and one light-hearted that were hidden on Netflix are now brought to light.

There are 4 videos I discovered on Netflix and return to time and time again. They are not typical, and for the most part I would have passed them over had I not been desperately avoiding homework. Two of them are movies: Harry Brown and Max Manus, Man of War; two of them are documentaries: Battlefield 360 and How Beer Saved the World.

Movies

Harry Brown is the story of a courageous old man that seeks justice on the street when his last true friend is pointlessly and brutally murdered by unruly and unchecked gangs of London.

This movie means a lot to me since I spent a great deal of time in England, and I've seen the street gangs of London, and know how little the police officers do. The gangs there have illegal weapons, and they turn them on unarmed law-abiding citizens in the name of fun. This movie gave me a sense of hope that maybe things will change some day, and law-abiding citizens will be safe.

Max Manus, Man of War is a movie that is the true story of the most brilliant Norwegian saboteurs of World War II. Max Manus helps liberate Norway from Nazi Germany through precise attacks on the Germans that bring about the eventual liberation of Norway and earns Manus a reputation among the elite. I really liked that, d espite his heroics, Manus shows the more fragile side of human nature near the end when he struggles to come to terms with the senseless deaths and futility of war.

Documentaries

Battlefield 360 is a detailed and well done documentary detailing the life of the USS Enterprise, the battles she fought in, and the South East Pacific portion of World War II. Before watching this video, I didn't know much about this portion of the war, nor the people that fought for our freedoms. After watching this documentary, though, I felt like I knew the people almost as well as the ship.

How Beer Saved the World is a fun documentary on history of beer. Yes, it's a little bit spoofed to make it more light-hearted and fun, but that is what makes it so great. The best part for me is how the documentary traces the impacts that beer had on human culture from the dawn of civilization to modern times.
