How to Use Your Tremolo Bar for Electric Guitars

Have you ever wanted to learn how to perform dive bombs like a pro? It isn't that hard, all you need is the right set up, a tremolo style bridge and an electric guitar.

The art of Dive bombing

The tremolo bar, also called a Whammy bar or tremolo arm, is the rod located on the bridge of most Stratocaster style guitars. You've probably heard professionals like Eddie Van Halen grab his tremolo bar and perform an epic sounding dive bomb.

But not everyone knows how to use the tremolo bar to get the same effect. I once heard a guy say that he bought an electric guitar and the tremolo bar didn't work when he wiggled the loose bar up and down. That is not how you use a Tremolo bar. So read on and I'll explain how you are supposed to do it.

Adjusting your guitar for the Tremolo

What you need to do first is Set up your Tremolo bridge to be able to perform dive bombs and vibrato. Not all guitar bridges are made the same so I won't go into detail about how you go about doing that in this article, but I will tell you that you need a floating bridge so that it is loose enough to move around. A stiff bridge will cause the bridge not to move and it won't be able to dive bomb.
You can click on the provided link to learn how to adjust your bridge.

After your guitar is setup you will then screw in your tremolo bar to the bridge, there is normally a small hole located for it to screw in place. You don't want it screwed in too tight, so after you screw it in all the way reverse it by one turn so that the Tremolo bar hangs loose and flops down towards the floor.

Grab the Tremolo arm and adjust it in your hand so that you can still pick and play the notes on your guitar without any problems. You'll need to find the right way to hold both the Tremolo arm and the guitar pick in your hand at the same time. Once you are comfortable you will be ready to try some dive bombs.

How to perform Dive bombs

Play a note on your guitar then push the Tremolo bar down towards the body of your guitar. You aren't wiggling the arm up and down, you are smashing it down. You can also try pulling the tremolo bar up for a similar effect. Do it gently first so that you don't break anything. Depending on how your bridge is setup will determine how far you can push or pull the Tremolo bar to get that diving sound.

What the Tremolo arm is doing is literally pulling and bending your bridge forward and away from the body of the guitar to change the pitch of all six strings. Think of it like a crowbar jammed into a crate prying it open. The tremolo bar is pretty much doing the same thing to your bridge.

Pulling on the Tremolo bar can have some pretty bad effects on your tuning and bridge, so make sure you know what you're doing before you go super dive bombing. Practice a bit with pushing the tremolo bar to see how far out of tune your guitar will go when you use it and how stiff it is to move around.

If you can't push the Tremolo bar far enough to get the right sound then you will need to adjust your bridge settings a bit more to get the proper diving effect. After awhile you'll get the hang of it and you will be able to get the sound you are looking for.

Alright, go grab your guitar and practice a few dive bombs!
