Sew a Hanging Pocket Organizer from One Quilt Block

This easy quilting project uses just one block and solves organizational problems, too.

If you don't have a single quilt block already made, then choose a quilt block pattern and sew one. Small quilting projects provide immediate gratification, as you can start and finish a complete quilting project within an hour or two. Easy projects like this are also an excellent way for a beginner to learn both patchwork and quilting. Machine quilting, in particular, is much easier to do when working with a small project as opposed to a whole quilt.

I started with a large block made of 4 smaller string pieced squares. The large block was about 18" square. I wanted to make an oversized large wall pocket for holding garment pattern pieces I am currently using. But you can make your pocket from any size block you have or choose to make. You could also use more than one block and make more than one pocket.

You will finish the patchwork piece just like a quilt. Cut a piece of batting and a backing piece that are slightly larger all around than your patchwork piece. Smooth them out flat and use pins to baste all three layers together. Then quilt, either by hand or machine. Square the edges, then bind the edges. For this project, I used grosgrain ribbon for the binding, but you can use premade bias binding, or make your own.

You will make this little quilt into a pocket by topstitching it on to another panel. Make this backing panel larger all around than your pocket piece. Use a sturdy fabric to support the quilted pocket and the things it will hold. You could cut the fabric for your wall panel twice as large as you want for the finished size, and then fold it in half with right sides together. Then you would sew all around, leaving a 4" opening for turning the panel right sides out. Use a point presser or something else to push out the corners and edges, press, stitch the opening closed, and topstitch all around. I used corduroy for my panel. Because this fabric is plenty sturdy, and because I didn't want to use more of this fabric than I needed, I only used one layer. I just double turned and pressed the edges on all 4 sides and hemmed all around.

Now that you have both your pocket and your back panel completed, put them together. Line up your pocket on top of the back layer, leaving margins all around the patchwork pocket. Use pins to hold it in place, and topstitch to sew it together along the bottom and sides of the pocket. Of course you will leave the top edge open, as this is what makes your pocket.

For hanging the pocket, you have several options to choose from. I made a casing and sewed this at the top edge. I inserted a dowel, slightly longer than my project, through this casing. Then I used a ribbon tied to each side of the dowel to hang from a nail. Instead of sewing a casing, you could also sew individual tabs from the top edge, or even just loops for hanging directly over a couple of nails. Another thing you could do is sew eyelets or install grommets on the corners and use these openings for attaching to the wall with nails.

You can see another picture of mine, hanging in my sewing room, on my blog.

These hanging pockets could be useful in any room. For the sewing room you could use them, like me, to store large pattern pieces, or for holding something else like embroidery hoops. It would be both fitting and ironic to make one for holding quilt blocks not yet sewn together! You could also use these pockets to hold papers, whether in the office or your child's room. This would be a great place to put mail or hold bills. You could even make one for the bathroom for holding magazines.

There is plenty of room for creativity on this project, from the block you use to the hanging method you choose, and also in what you can use these pockets to store. If you make one, I bet you will want to make more!
