When and How to Get Your Tire Repaired

When tires lose air there is a cause, this article tells you what to look for and what to insist upon when a tire needs attention.

Here is all you need to know about finding a tire puncture and getting it repaired in a way that ensures your safety. First, how do you know that a tire needs attention?

Visual Inspection '" You might hear a clicking noise which draws your attention to one of your tires. This does not mean that you need a repair, but if when inspecting the noisy tire you see that a foreign object like a screw or a nail is the source of the sound, you need to resolve the issue. Don't remove the object until you are at a place where the tire can be repaired by you or a professional. Of course if you are driving a 2020 model year vehicle or newer, you will be alerted to low tire pressure by the TPMS light on your dashboard.

Air Loss '" Use the 20 percent rule to determine whether your tire needs to be checked out. A typical passenger car tire requires 35 psi, so anytime you need to add seven or eight pounds the inner warning light in your head should flash. This level of additional air rules out the probability that the low inflation was the result of pressure variation as a result of temperature changes and should motivate you to have the tire checked.

So once you have established the need what kind of tire repair should you insist upon?

Dismounting '" Whenever you have a tire repaired it should be removed from the wheel. Insist upon this because only then can the inside of the tire be inspected. There are a number of conditions that might be disclosed when a tire is repaired while off the wheel. There may have been a previous repair too close to the new injury to be repaired safely. The object that has punctured the tire may have caused additional damage to the inside of the tire. This may not be visible from the outside. The tire may have been run while underinflated and suffered damage to the liner which cannot be repaired. Only if the inside of the tire is evaluated can these problems be discovered.

Combination Plug and Patch '" This method of inside patch is desirable and in many cases recommended by car and tire manufacturers. This patch has a stem attached to it which fills the hole with repair material. This strengthens the repair and protects the steel cord of the tire from rust forming when the puncture hole takes on water or road salt. The patch reinforces the injured area and seals the surface surrounding the plug. In this way, it serves as sort of an insurance policy for the plug.

The photo accompanying this article shows two repairs of the same tire. The patch on the left is part of a combination repair performed with the tire removed from the wheel. On the right is a string type plug that was pushed through the tire tread from the exterior. The string material is malleable and forms to the puncture hole to seal the tire.

The contrast between the two completed repairs does point how more comprehensive the combination plug and patch repair is when compared to a plug type fix. Which repair would you like to be riding on?
