The Denture Owners Manual

When buying a car or a motorcycle, there is the all important Owner's Manual. Consider this article the Denture Owner's Manual.

Dentures are poor replacements for natural teeth. Someone with an artificial arm can not expect to play a stringed instrument like the violin or guitar. Likewise, those with full dentures may have trouble eating some foods. Speaking normally may be difficult at first. New dentures require adjustments to improve the fit at first and subsequently. There are many options for adhesives and cleansers. Patients often request this information, but many patients do not know what to expect or what questions to ask.

When buying a car or a motorcycle, there is the all important Owner's Manual. Consider this article the Denture Owner's Manual.

Pre-driving Checks and Adjustments

There are several ways that the patient and the dentist are able to improve satisfaction with a denture before starting. Dentists encourage patients to bring a large photo of themselves with a big toothy smile. School photographs and wedding pictures are likely choices. The dentist and the dental lab technician will try to match the denture teeth to the patient's own.

Before starting the process of creating the denture, the dentist will examine the lining of the patient's mouth and the areas that will support the denture for sores, swelling, and signs of infection. Dentists will treat unhealthy tissue using medication, surgery, and other techniques. It is very important to completely resolve all of these problems before starting the process of making a denture, even if the patient feels that they cannot wait for the denture. Just as it is essential to build a house on a firm foundation, the support of healthy tissue is important for a well fitting comfortable denture.

Denture fabrication is a private business for most patients and dentists. However, there is one time that the patient should bring a friend or family member - the wax try in. This is the step when the dental lab creates a wax model of the final denture. The dentist tries the wax denture in the patient's mouth, makes final adjustments and hands a mirror to the expectant patient. At this moment, the patient should hold the mirror at arm's length, and admire their new smile. Look critically. How is the color? Does the size of the teeth match the size of the patient's mouth? Is the middle of the denture in the middle of the face? Does a smile reveal enough of the teeth? How does the patient sound when they talk with the new denture? Finally, bring in that friend or family member. What do they think?
Before leaving, ask the dentist to have the dental lab ID your denture with your name or social security number. This is important just in case some one must return your denture to you.

The Test Drive

Most dentists send patients home with their new dentures with instructions to return in a day or two for a "follow up". Do not expect to be able to run to the nearest steak house to give the new teeth a test drive on your favorite cut of beef. Dentures are like any new tool or instrument. Using them requires practice. The lips and tongue will have to learn to accommodate their new neighbors. Begin by practicing drinking. Then, move on to soft foods such as gelatin and eggs. When eating solid, chewy and crunchy foods, use a knife and fork. Small pieces are the key to success. Do not use the front teeth of the denture to bite into apples, pizza or sandwiches. Doing so may loosen the front denture teeth and dislodge the denture.

Practice speaking. Read the newspaper out loud in front of a mirror. The lips and tongue use different parts of the denture to make different sounds. For example, the tongue presses against the roof of the mouth just behind the front teeth to create the "s" sound. Too deep a space here may cause a lisp. Touching the edges of the upper teeth to the lower lip is important for both the "f" and "v" sounds. Teeth that are too long will mute both of these sounds. Fortunately, lips and tongues are very resilient. After a few days' practice, most denture wearers are able to speak normally. A quick adjustment by the dentist will usually improve more serious speech problems.

At the follow up visit, the dentist will look for areas under the dentures that are sore or may become sore. They will adjust the denture where necessary to improve comfort and speech. This is a good time to ask the dentist questions about your dentures.

Appearance and care

Just like any device, dentures require regular maintenance. Brush dentures twice a day to remove plaque and food particles. Dentures build up plaque and tartar just like natural teeth, except that dentures get plaque and tartar all over, inside and out. Denture brushes have special shapes to fit all of the contours of a denture. Brush with a denture cleanser that comes in a tube, toothpaste, or powdered electric dishwasher detergent. Rinse the dentures thoroughly. Brush the denture bearing areas of the gums with a soft tooth brush.

Leave the dentures out at night. Just as one would not wear their shoes all day and all night, the mouth needs a rest without dentures. Soak the dentures overnight in water or a denture cleanser such as Efferdent or Polident.

Maintenance

Finally, return to the dentist once or twice a year for a check up. The dentist will look for signs of infection and oral cancer. Equally important, the dentist will check the fit of the dentures and make adjustments or reline the denture if necessary.
