Six Ways Kids Can Help with Fall Gardening

Fall gardening can be a lot of fun for kids. From digging holes to jumping in leaves, picking spring colors and using power tools there are lots of fringe benefits for kids who help with fall gardening chores.

There are lots of tasks to be completed in the fall if you want to have a great-looking, colorful garden next spring. Now that the weather has cooled, it is an enjoyable time for families to get back outdoors and work together to beautify their living spaces. Even young children can get involved with the fall gardening chores. Here are five great ways they can help.

Rake the leaves

If you have a rake your kids can handle, this is one chore they will actually probably enjoy, at least for a while. That's because raking up the world's biggest pile of leaves means that at least for a little bit, you get to jump in the world's biggest pile of leaves. Have fun with this task, and take some awesome fall photos, then work together to gather up the leaves for composting or disposal.

Spread the mulch

Spreading extra mulch before winter can help protect your plants and let your flower beds retain needed moisture. Get your kids a good pair of gloves, put the bag of mulch in their wagon and let them go to work spreading it around the flowers. This chore is kind of hard to mess up, even for preschoolers.

Plant spring bulbs

Let this fun chore begin at the garden store. Picking colorful bulbs to add to your yard is one of the most enjoyable parts of fall gardening. Your child can learn a lot about the life of flowers as they plant their chosen bulbs and wait for the tender shoots to appear in the spring.

Build a compost bin

If your kids are like mine, they love to help with tasks that involve using tools. Try building a compost bin together, allowing your kids to use tools under close adult supervision. In the spring, you'll have lots of great organic fertilizer to use in your flower beds, and your kids will know they played an important part in making that happen.

Trim shrubs and hedges

Older kids can be a lot of help when it is time to trim the shrubs and hedges around your yard. Check with your local gardening experts if you need advice on the right times to prune your woody plants. Then teach your kids how to safely use trimmers and where to make the best cuts for healthy plants in the spring.

Dig some holes

Would you like to add a small pond or fountain to your garden? How about a sprinkler system, some rose bushes or trees? Fall can be a great time to do all of these things. Lucky for you, kids love to dig holes. So often, parents have to tell children to stop digging in the yard, but this is one time they can really just go wild.
