How to Check the Alignment of a Table Saw
The table saw is one of the most used power tools in your workshop. Keeping it well maintained is critical for accurate work and personal safety.
Because of the potential of personal injury with any piece of machinery is real, I prefer to unplug a machine that I am checking for calibration or making any adjustments on. I use a one-inch dial indicator mounted on a two-by-two piece of stock. You will need to remove the blade and clean the arbor, hardware, and the entire area. Then mount a new blade and set the indicator tip just below the valleys of the teeth, setting the indicator to zero. Rotate the blade and watch for run out, being careful not to put any side pressure on the blade. If there is more than .002 run out per inch from the center of the blade, the blade should be removed and the arbor and washers checked for any debris. Even small amounts of dirt or grit can produce false readings. If there is still too much run out, you may want to consider replacing the arbor, or even the whole table saw, depending on its general condition and the quality of the saw.
If there is minimal run out, the next thing to check is whether the blade is perpendicular to the table. You can check the accuracy of any adjustments you make with a square or a one-two-three block, which is a metal block of steel that has been ground to tolerances of millionths of an inch in size, parallel, and perpendicular. The block measures one by two by three inches, hence its name. You can check the accuracy of any adjustments you make by cutting a piece of wood and measuring the angle with a protractor.
Finally, you can check that the blade is running parallel to the miter slot with the indicator that is still mounted on the two-by-two. I usually clamp the bracket that is holding the indicator directly to the miter tool. Remember to zero the indicator for this test and measure from the front of the saw blade just below the valley of the teeth, to the rear of the saw blade. If there is more than a few thousands run out, you can adjust this with the mounting hardware that holds the casing of your arbor to the bottom side of your table.
Remember to practice good shop safety by not making any adjustments unless the saw is unplugged. In addition, when buying a new saw, go with quality and read the entire manual for safe procedures of normal saw use and for making any adjustments to the alignment of your saw.
