Five Things You Don’t Want to Do with a Power Tool
Using power tools can be dangerous. Don’t do these five things and get the most out of your power tools—by not letting them get the most out of you.
Whether it's a drill, table saw or sander, it's got to have the power to get those home improvement projects completed-without wearing yourself out in the process. Spiderman said, "With awesome power comes awesome responsibility" or something like that. But you should treat power tools just like that. "With great respect" because without it, your tools can quickly get out of hand: literally-and possibly take yours with it. Don't do these dumb five things with power tools and you'll be sure to get the most out of your next home improvement project-without losing any precious parts in the process.
Back up a Moving Circular Saw Blade
When you have to stop cutting in the middle of the cut with a circular saw, don't back up the blade out of the cut until the blade has come to a complete rest. It could easily snag on the stock and shoot out backwards at tremendous velocity. Be sure not to stand behind the blade once you remove the blade from the cut or you could get cut from the saw blade before the fence has a chance to close.
Stand at the Exit of a Table Saw/Router/Shaper
It might seem like a good place to stand. You could even help feed the stock through the blade; right? Wrong! The exit (the side the stock comes out cut at) of the blade or bit can be a dangerous place to be. The blade can easily flip stock cutoff pieces into the blade and have them come flying out towards anyone near the exit of the tool.
Use a Wide Paddle Bit without a Hand Grip Attached
You've either seen or own a drill with a hand grip attached to the side. When drilling through wood with a wide paddle bit, the shank can get caught into the wood. When this happens, if you don't have a good grip on the drill, it's going to twist and get ripped out of your hands. A firm hand grip can prevent you from getting your wrists twisted into a pretzel around a turning drill.
Force a Jigsaw Blade
You might want to hurry up and cut through your project. But when you force a jigsaw blade against the material two things can happen that will ruin your day. (1) You're going to possibly break the blade (2) the blade will tear through the material which will tear out the wood grains on the face of the project.
Cut without Eye Protection
They have safety equipment for a reason! Just because you've seen your neighbor cutting 4x4 posts in his flip-flops using a circular saw over his head while he was smoking a cigarette-doesn't mean that it's a good idea. I've seen countless one-eyed construction workers who will tell you the same thing I'm about to: Better put on your safety glasses when using any power tools or you'll poke your eye out kid!
