Tips for Using an Air Nailer

Many DIY projects and construction projects require the use of an air nailer. The benefits of using an air nailer are numerous; they make the job much easier and faster since the majority of the work is done for you.

1. Manual

Read the safety manual of any new air nailer or nail gun before using it. When using an air nailer even if you have years of experience you should note that every machine is different and poses different operational hazards.

2. Safety Glasses

You should always wear safety glasses when using any power tool; there is risk of minor explosion or a misfired nail which can be potentially hazardous to your sight.

3. Place the tip directly on the surface you wish to nail

A common mistake when using an air nailer is that the user will not place the tip directly on the surface being nailed. They think it is a projectile, which is not the case and the nails often bounce back. To avoid injury make sure you have the tip on the location of the surface being nailed before pulling the trigger.

4. Dual-tip-trigger

A dual tip trigger is when both the tip of the nail gun has to touch the material being nailed and the manual trigger has to be pressed down as well. The danger here is that many people like to hold down the manual trigger and just decompress the tip into what they are nailing to save a few seconds. This is extremely dangerous and accidents do happen often.

5. Do you have a clear path?

Unlike using a regular hammer and nails if you hit a stud the nail can come shooting back at you. Take the time to make sure the surface you are nailing is obstacle free to avoid injury.

6. Pointing the gun

Even when your finger is not on the trigger never point the gun towards yourself or anyone else. A common injury is foot and toe injuries from people placing the gun tip towards their feet and either the trigger accidently goes off or they pull it on accident.

7. What nails do you need?

Just like any DIY or construction job you will want to use the nails that are best for the job at hand. The nails come in strips which make them easy to load and fire; most hardware stores will have the different varieties next to each other. If you are unsure which ones to use for your gun, ask a sales associate, do not take the risk of using the wrong product.

8. Do you need a cordless or corded air nailer?

Air nailers come either corded or cordless; the cordless are great for doing roof jobs or jobs that make stringing a cord to your position a real obstacle. The corded air nailers use compressed air and are much more powerful, so unless you are doing roofing jobs the corded models work best.

9. Driving the nail

When driving the nail a common mistake a lot of people make is that they use too much pressure which makes the nail go too deep into the wood. Use the correct pressure setting for the job at hand.

10. Test fire

A great way to determine if you are using the tool properly and it is on the correct settings for the job is to test fire it into some scrap wood. Play with the air nailer a bit on the scrap wood to make sure you know how to use it safely; you will be glad you did because you will not make costly mistakes on the actual project.
