Make Your Own Kwanzaa Mkeka for Less

Learn how to do a simple weave and wrap to create a Mkeka (mat) without the use of glues or staplers. An easy step-by-step guide to create your very own Mkeka for Kwanzaa.

No Stapler Needed!

Items Needed:Three red 12" felt squares, three green 12" felt squares, black yarn, two (at least one yard each) long quarter of an inch thick sticks (found at home improvement and craft stores for less than $1 each), scissors

Instructions:

Cut all of the felt squares 3 inches thick, and long ways so that you have many long strips after completing. Cut the ends of each felt square so that you have at least a half inch of felt stemming from the 3 inch felt, like a little tail. Only cut one and a half inches from each end so that you have at least nine inches of felt that is full, and not cut into. Once you have completed this to each piece of felt, continue.

Weaving Your Mkeka (mat)

Lay down any color felt you wish to, aside each other, upon a table, only seven. For this, we shall use red as our first lay-down color. Take the other color and beginning horizontally, place one green strand of felt under the red felt, then over the next red felt, and under the red felt, and over, and under until you have reached the end. When beginning at the end of the felt, it is easier to simply slip the felt in for arrangement. Once you have completed weaving the first piece of felt into the others, take the next piece of green felt and begin weaving it in the opposite direction, such as placing the green over the red, then under the red, and over, then under, and so on. After completion of all of your seven pieces of felt woven into the other felt, you may have the desire to open ovens with it, but you're not done yet.

Sticks Not Stones

Measure, by hand, the width of the full felt of your mat, and cut that same measurement on a stick after adding one inch to the stick (approx. 10 inches). Measure each full section from top to bottom, side to side, and cut that same measurement within each stick, after adding one inch to each stick. You should have four sticks, and when placed upon your mat, you may notice that the sticks are quite close to measurement of your inner full mat including six inches overlap to each side. Now it's time to connect your Mkeka to a frame.

Connecting Your Mkeka to a Frame

Tie a knot using the black yarn where two sticks meet, six inches from the edges on both. Wrap the black yarn around the two sticks until the sticks are securely connected. Tie the first end of the knot you had completed moments prior to the yarn you are currently working on, into a double-knot. Cut the loose ends. Lay the sticks down in correct formation abover your mat to assure proper locations to tie. Tie those locations together with the same technique described above. You will have a square frame that is ready to be used for your Mkeka.

Place the wooden square on top of your mat. Place one felt string looking end under the wood, and curve it upwards then towards you. Right after reaching the full round mark, place this felt under the already wrapped felt and slowly pull it through. Make sure that it is somewhat secure, and that you use the felt that is narrow but leave the full felt out of this tie. Do the same for each and every felt end, tie them one at a time onto the sticks in their proper location.

Final Wrap

Take the black yarn and tie a knot on one of the stick corners, any one will do. Wrap the black yarn around a stick, and another, the next, until you return to that same spot. When wrapping, make sure that you do not overlap or double-up, wrap modestly. The last thing to keep at mind would be that you should tuck the felt under the black yarn wrap so that the yarn covers each felt end. Once reaching where you began, tie a double knot with the yarn to the other yarn that comes from the first knot. Cut any loose yarn. You have created your very own Kwanzaa Mkeka, by the affordable hand.
