Power Tool Safety: Review This or Lose an Eye

Power tools cause thousands of tragic home accidents each year. Even the seasoned "pro" needs to review safety procedures often.

First, slow down. Yes, slow down. Power tools will make your project task easier. That circular saw will cut the 2 X 4 a lot quicker than an "old fashioned" cross cut hand saw. That fact does not mean to rush through the use of the power saw. You must think ahead and prepare mentally for your use of power tools.

Use the proper tool for the job, with the proper attachments, if needed. Read the directions and safety precautions for the tool in question. Do not assume that the safety precautions are written just for a dummy that doesn't know anything. That dummy just may turn out to be you. Never remove or alter the manufacturer installed safety guards on any power tool. If the safety guard is in your way, odds are you are using the wrong tool for the job! All power tools (all tools, for that matter) must be in good working condition.

Now to your work area: Have sufficient lighting, without shadows that hide critical areas. Don't let people look over your shoulder, keep them away. Insure that the surface you are walking on is free from rubbish or other trip hazards. Material storage needs to be accessible, but out of your way. If your work area is indoors, make sure you have adequate ventilation.

Once you are ready to start your project, think again of how you will perform the required tasks. Power tools will greatly assist, if used correctly. Make certain that you have a solid stance, especially if you are on a ladder. If you have to exert force on, say, a power screw driver while on a ladder, be aware that if the driver slips, you might find yourself falling backwards off the ladder. Remember the "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" thingy from 7th grade science class?

It is always best to not "force the tool". It is a power tool, so let it do its work for you. If you have to exert too much force, you probably don't have the right sized tool for the job, or perhaps the attachment, e.g. blade or bit, is too dull.

Be careful, be very careful with table saws. Always use a push block when you get to the end of a rip cut. Table saws are responsible for many, many incidents of horrific accidents each year. Never reach over a table saw blade. Get into that habit, even when the saw is not running.

Power tools need power. You know electrical power can kill. Be smart. Use GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) for all connections. Never use split or damaged extension cords. If the wire insulation begins to pull out of the plug end of a cord, throw that cord away. No, just wrapping black electrical tape around a split cord is not sufficient! Throw it away!

It sounds simple, but be careful not to cut the power cord with the saw or drill you are using! And for goodness sakes, make sure that the switch on any power tool is set to "Off" before you plug that power tool in! Treat that drill as you would a firearm: Don't carry it around with your "finger on the trigger"!

Finally, wear the necessary PPE (personal protection equipment). At a minimum you must wear eye protection. Not just a pair of wraparound sunglasses, either. The safety glasses need to be rated glasses, capable of withstanding impact. In some cases, such as using a power chisel on hardened concrete, goggles or even a full face shield may be in order. You only have one set of eyes. Never take a chance. That 30 seconds you save by not going to put on your safety glasses just might result in blindness for the rest of your life.

Ear protection, dust masks, and gloves are also required for some tasks. If you don't know if you should wear a particular PPE item, wear it anyway. Better be safe than sorry when using power tools.

Power tools are useful. Power tools are also potential instruments of pain, anguish, and death. You chose each time you use one. Are you going to complete that project or become another statistic? You decide.
