These are the 12 best classic light-gun video games from a time when the NES Zapper was like having Virtual Reality at your fingertips.

Back in the '80s and '90s, there was nothing that seemed cooler than light-gun games. Putting that NES Zapper in your hand was the closest thing to virtual reality that you could imagine and while light-gun games were never produced in the quantities of games from certain other genres, there were multiple titles that provided endless rounds of on-target fun. These 12 classic light-gun games will have you shooting out the door for a day of garage sales so you can track down an old-school CRT TV to relive your best gun-slinging memories from the good ole days.

Mad Dog McCree (3DO, CD-i, Sega CD)

Full-motion video meets the old west in this classic light-gun shooting game. The Hollywood style production values are fitting since the footage was actually shot at Old Tucson Studios, the same Arizona movie studios where most of "Tombstone" and many other classic western movies were shot.

T2: The Arcade Game (Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo)

The Super NES version was the choice home conversion of the arcade classic due to the Mode-7 scaling that the Sega Genesis lacked, but also due to the Super Scope support which gave the player a then-impressive shooting experience.

Lethal Enforcers 2: Gun Fighters (Sega CD, Sega Genesis, Sony PlayStation)

The western-themed sequel to the urban-set original kept the digitized graphics intact, giving the game a gritty yet then-realistic visual aesthetic. The action was fast and the gun slinging was exciting in Lethal Enforcers 2.

Area 51 (Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation)

The digitized sprites were set in a pre-rendered 3D environment, giving Area 51 a unique sci-fi feel and who didn't want to slay aliens from the comfort of their own home in 1996? This was the summer of "Independence Day."

House of the Dead (Sega Saturn)

Before zombies were seemingly everywhere, Sega took a stab...err shot at bringing zombies into their Virtua Cop game engine and the results were interesting indeed. Although the game's translation from the Model 2 arcade board to the Sega Saturn home console did seem rushed in terms of audio and visual quality, the sheer horror and intensity of the game supersedes any technical flaws.

Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sony PlayStation)

Konami put the Justifier light-gun in players hands in the early-'90s and just the name alone makes it sound like you mean business. This was also one of the first games to garner an MA-17 rating, placing it right up there with Night Trap in terms of controversial content.

Operation Wolf (Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, ZX Spectrum)

This arcade title was ported to nearly every console available in the '80s, but the NES, Sega Master System, and ZX Spectrum gave players light-gun support, making those three conversions preferable to the others. The action-packed title makes the player a special forces agent tasked with freeing hostages, and the gameplay's speed puts you right on the front line.

Hogan's Alley (Nintendo Entertainment System)

The simplicity of this 1985 classic is what makes it such a timeless light-gun video game. The game is devoid of gimmicks and is a pure test of timing and accuracy. Also, any excuse to use your NES Zapper is a good excuse.

Time Crisis (Sony PlayStation)

Time Crisis was a direct port from the arcades to the original Sony PlayStation console, giving players the full-on experience without stealing their quarters like a lunchroom bully. The Namco title gave sharpshooters the ability to take cover by hitting a button which added a revolutionary dynamic to the light-gun shooter genre.

Virtua Cop (Sega Saturn)

Sega brought its trademark 3D polygonal graphics to the light-gun shooting world with Virtua Cop. The virtua bad guys differed from their digitized predecessors in that they reacted differently depending on where they were shot; we take this for granted in a post-Y2K world but this was a huge deal in 1995.

Virtua Cop 2 (Sega Saturn)

In the '90s, Sega was not a company content to rest on its laurels and you can bet your favorite six-shooter that a Sega sequel would advance the franchise and the entire genre. The second Virtua Cop picked up where the first left off and added more intensity to the firefights and a brilliant car chase sequence.

Duck Hunt (Nintendo Entertainment System)

Duck Hunt provides NES Zapper fun for the whole family. The gameplay is simple but about as addictive as anything this side of Tetris or Candy Crush.
