Plant Guide for the Holidays

With over 20 years of experience in plant care in commercial settings, let me guide your choices for holiday plants.

Plants for the holidays can make a beautiful and cheerful statement in your home. The key to success is choosing the right ones for your space and the care you are willing to give. Here is a helpful guide to 4 plants that will liven up any home.I have over 20 years experience in providing and caring for Plants in commercial and residential settings let my experience help you succeed in choosing the right plants for your home.

The most often requested plants for Christmas décor are:

Poinsettia, for the variety of colors

Christmas Cactus, for log lasting blooms and ease of care

Peace Lily, for the name and sentiment as well as the lovely white blooms

Sansevaria, for its ease and architectural shape

With holidays fast approaching it's time to start considering some houseplants to ad that something special to your home. Follow this handy guide I developed over the span of 20 years in the plant care industry. It will help you select your holiday plants. Will you have time to properly care for the plants? Do you want a splash of color or just the lush greenery? Is your home cool, hot, dry, dark or sunny? These and other questions need to be addressed before you buy plants. I often had the challenge of bringing in and maintaining live plants to some very difficult locations.

The hot or warm, dry home will be harder to find the right plants for but there are a few that can take this unfriendly situation. The always green Sansevaria is a good choice for the hot or warm home. It tolerates low to high light and needs relatively little care. It has several color variations too from a greyish or silver tone to deep lovely green, sometimes they are variegated (more than one color). While this plant does bloom it is unlikely to bloom in December and it is an orange bloom. It is easy and that makes it first on my list. An arrangement of this with solid color Christmas balls in a basket is great on a table or near the door. Placing a big Red bow on it helps too.

For cheerful, traditional red, the standard Poinsettia is good for a bright spot. It does not like to be really dry so putting it in a grouping of plants is one way to increase the humidity for it. I found that groups of massed color looked very festive in banks and business lobbies. You can achieve the professionally designed look by placing taller plants in the rear and shorter to the front, choose no more than 3 colors and if you use 3 they should all be solid colors or only one that is variegated. Poinsettias also come in an amazing array of colors from creamy white to deep red to peach tones and pinks. They are also available in some truly spectacular mixed colors (variegated). For example there is one that is a basic red with pink splotches. And some that have red and white, picking the right one for your home will be a lot of fun. If you are massing many of them together try to stay with one color or one main color and just a few to provide contrast. Be sure to keep the soil on this moist but not sitting in water.

Another favorite is the Christmas Cactus, a great choice for bright spots. This plant comes in a salmon, pink, red and sometimes white. It prefers to dry out slightly; you can check it by placing your finger about 2 inches into the soil to check for dryness. Water sparingly or your blooms will all fall off. Note that this plant requires special treatment to re-bloom next year by limiting the hours of light it receives to force blooming. These should have a coordinating color of bow or container for best look.

The glorious Peace Lily is a great plant it likes to stay pretty damp so really keep an eye on it and water at the slightest sign of wilting. The Peace Lily likes a lot of light and does best when it is near a window but you can set it on a rolling base to move it into light during the day and into a special spot when you are entertaining. It is a beautiful green plant and it often will bloom in December with large pure white flowers called Spaths. This one is a popular gift plant all year long. It looks best in linear containers and can use any color bow for a burst of color.

If you consider your style of plant care and your lighting you should be able to keep lovely plants for the holidays and hopefully beyond. Checking the surface of the soil to a depth of about 3 inches will help you gauge when to water. Too much water can be just as damaging as too little.

Keep in mind indoor plants do not live forever so occasionally replacing them is to be expected. Enjoy and have a wonderful holiday season.
