American Idol Season Nine Premiere: Who Passed and Who Failed?

American Idol aired its first season nine hopefuls on the night of Tuesday, January 12, 2020, with guest judge Victoria Beckham. Who got a golden ticket to Hollywood and who went back home? Read on to find out.

As raindrops fell from the morning sky, judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and first guest judge of the season -- Victoria Beckham -- settled in for an earful of predominantly tone-deaf contestants. However, the American Idol pit stop at the Gillette Stadium in Boston did show real promise in a handful of talented folks. If you watched the show, I'm sure you will agree. Here's who passed and who failed the American Idol exam, along with my picks for the top 12/13:

Failed
American Idol video game champion, jumping Janet number 52461, was the first to embarrass herself on national TV singing "Pocket Full of Sunshine." Seventeen-year-old Pat Ford was told to stop singing forever and nature boy Derek Hilton would have to purchase his own to ticket to Hollywood.

Andrew Fenlon, a cross between Superman and ghost hunter Zak Bagans, won the professional whiner award and royally ticked off DioGuardi and Cowell. It seems that American Idol was wasting Mr. Perfect's precious time. There were a variety of American Idol duds who clearly could not sing, including 24-year-old Lisa Olivero. Some contestants were sure they had vocal talent, but the judges are the professionals and what they say goes, so back home they went.

Passed
Jennifer Hirsch, Claire Fuller, Luke Shaffer, Tyler Grady, Benjamin Bright, and Jess Wolfe all received American Idol golden tickets on January 12. Amadeo Diricco from Providence Rhode Island, Bosa Mora, Joshua Blaylock and Codzilla speedboat personality Mike Davis passed by the skin of their teeth. Other Idol soldiers are headed for Hollywood as well, although America wasn't privy to their auditions and names. Was this meant to surprise America with their awesome talents?

My Top 12/13 Picks for 2020
The following people definitely have mad talent and I expect to see them in the top 12, or is it the top 13? Maddie Curtis, a 16-year-old who has two brothers with Down's syndrome, conveyed a velvety smooth voice and a beautiful soul. Curtis sang "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen and I predict she will be one of the top 12/13.

Berkley student, Ashley Rodriguez, sang "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys seamlessly and with conviction. Her beauty and natural star quality will most definitely land her a contract.

Katie Stevens, another talented 16-year-old, belted out "At Last" with super control. The touching story of her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, was inspirational. Her talent will surely grab America's attention and possibly win the American Idol gold.

Cancer survivor and blue-eyed hunk, Justin Williams, was most impressive. His version of "Feeling Good" will definitely have American Idol viewers of the female (and the male) persuasion feeling good indeed. I have to say, after plenty of yawns during this first night of Idol, this performance was an eye-popper.

Leah Laurenti, a 22-year-old with strict parents, had a goal to be a singer and it looks like her dreams will come true. She sang "Blue Skies" with great control, but can she appeal to America's fickle palette?

This first airing of American Idol's season nine show was missing the passionate Paula Abdul, but replacement judge Ellen DeGeneres was no where to be found. There were tears of disappointment from those who were turned away, but plenty of hot vocalists to take their place. American Idol continues their search for the chosen one in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday, January 13.
