Recycle brown paper bags or packaging paper into eco-friendly placemats. These easy to weave placemats use an under-over weave that is simple to complete.

Things You'll Need:

Brown paper
Ruler
Scissors
Iron
Ironing board
Wax paper
Mod Podge
Sponge brush

Instructions:

Step 1 - Take apart the paper bag to create one large sheet of brown paper.

Step 2 - Measure and cut the brown paper into 2-inch strips 18-inches long.

Step 3 - Fold the long edges to the center of the strip. Each fold will be ½-inch in width. Crease along the fold lines.

Step 4 - Iron each strip to press a solid crease in the brown paper.

Step 5 - Place 18 strips side by side on a vertical axis.

Step 6 - Weave the remaining strips horizontally across the vertical strips using an under-over weave. This means place the first horizontal strip over the first vertical strip, under the second, over the third and so on. Move the first woven strip to the top edge of the placemat.

Step 7 - Weave the second horizontal strip by placing it under the first strip, over the second, under the third and so on. Move the strip directly under the first.

Step 8 - Repeat Step 6 and 7 until all 18 strips are woven into place.

Step 9 - Place the completed brown paper placement on a sheet of wax paper.

Step 10 - Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the surface of the placemat. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely. Peal the placemat from the wax paper and turn. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the opposite side. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before use.

Add a drawn or colored design to the brown paper placemat before applying the Mod Podge. Allow each person to draw a design with crayons or permanent markers. Apply the Mod Podge after the drawing is complete.
