A Fun and Easy Music and Art Project: Classical Music Collage

Have a wonderful time with your children learning about different music instruments and making art!

What you will need for a the Art Collage

You will need construction paper, glue or glue sticks, scissors, crayons, music magazines, and music instrument catalogues. If you have a computer, you can print up many music instrument images from the internet. Other fun art materials, like glitter, colorful yarn, and sequins can add extra color to the art project. It is also helpful to have a CD player handy to pay some soothing classical music while your children are working on their art project.

Making a Classical Music Art Collage

Before you begin working on the classical music collage, talk about the different kinds of instrument families. The main instrument families are the string instruments, percussion instruments, woodwind instruments, and brass instruments. Violins belong to the string family. Percussion instruments include the drums, xylophone, timpani, and congas. Woodwind instruments include the flue, clarinet, and oboe. Trumpets, tubas, and trombones are in the brass family. If you are unfamiliar with the music instruments, you might want to take this time to explore the music instrument families with your children, through music books and the internet.

If you have music albums that emphasize certain music instruments, you can engage in a fun music listening exercise with the children. Play a music track and have the children guess which instruments they hear. You can play a string quartet for them, a brass ensemble, an African drum circle, a percussion quintet, or a jazz trio. Enjoy listening to different music styles. Continue playing the music as the children work on their art project.

You can also discuss notes, like eighth notes, with the children and talk about bass clefs and treble clefs. Once the children have a good idea about what instrument and notes can go in their art collage, have them begin working on their art project.

They can draw their own instruments on the construction paper and cut and paste them onto their paper. Use colorful yarn as strings and sequins can become the base for music notes. Emphasize covering the entire paper with notes and music instruments.

When the children have finished their classical music art collage, have each child share which instruments they chose for their art collage.
