I Still Love Scratch and Sniff Stickers

Sticker collecting, one of the most popular fads of the eighties, disappeared without a trace. I thought it was time someone tried to bring back this little bit of pop culture.

The Craze

Former children of the 1980s might recall the smelly stickers that we collected and traded, produced by Trend, MelloSmello, and CTP, amongst others. But to use a bad pun, this is a fad that just didn't stick around. Scratch and Sniff stickers are still produced by Trend today, but they never regained their 1980s popularity. And as a school teacher, I wanted to bring it back. After all, my students loved receiving smelly stickers. They were always excited when I plastered them on spelling tests and homework papers. So why not reintroduce a new generation to the world of sticker trading? How hard could it be?

Reigniting A Fad

I took a dive into my basement treasures and fished out my old sticker books. I brought them all to school to see what my students thought. And just as I suspected, they loved them. I explained the process of going into stores where they would sell stickers by the roll (and they only cost a few cents each!), or tagging along with my mom when she shopped at the local teaching supply store. My students leafed through every crispy page, pointing out their favorites, trying to see if my oldest smellies still smelled (and some of them did). I bought cheap photo albums at the dollar store, and handed them out to some of the students who seemed interested. During recess, I encouraged them to give it a shot, and showed them the finer points of sticker trading. But each and every time I returned after lunch to find the sticker books abandoned or empty. It was like this year after year, with every new class that I tried to turn over. The closest I ever came was one little boy who seemed to enjoy keeping the stickers he earned in a tiny blue notebook. But he never shared or traded, it was his own personal collection. What went wrong?

The Change

"I think it died because like all other things that people go crazy about, it just fizzles out over time," said Bubbledog, who maintains a vintage Scratch and Sniff sticker website of the same name. "People always just move on to the next big thing." Still others feel that kids today have more interesting diversions and don't need stickers to fill their time. Michelle Strader, former sticker collector and now a mom of teenage triplets, told me, "There are so many more things to occupy kids now, like TV and movies and special effects, they are not as amused as we were by simple things."

Stickers Today: No More Magic?

Amy Peppler, co-author of The Vintage Scratch and Sniff Collector's Guide (Pulp! Publishing, 2020) explained that maybe the novelty is gone. "[In the 1980s], sticker collecting was the newest, latest thing," she told me. "Scratch and sniff technology was new to the mass market. These days there may be no 'magic' to it, since stickers as collectibles/craft items have been around for 35 years."

So perhaps we'll have to keep them what they are- vintage. A memory. And we'll have to add to our own collections through ebay and online trading posts. But I am sad for our children, because they will never understand the magic of a little piece of paper in a book, or the simplicity of sitting on the playground in a circle, hoping that the friend next to you will have something worth trading. Or maybe there is a way to bring the forgotten art of sticker trading back to life again, and we just haven't figured out what it is yet. Or at least, I haven't. But I did get that one little boy to start a collection in his notebook, so maybe that counts for something.
