Interview with Eric Root: Hairdresser to the Stars

An Interview with Eric Root, also known as "The Hair Dresser To The Stars." An insightful look into a Man who lived 'Life Experiences' that no other person on Earth can attest. Ladies and Gentlemen: Mr. Eric Root.

Well, there is one Human Being that can say that he did all of the above. His name is Eric Root. His experiences throughout his life--being a Celebrity himself--amongst the Upper Echelon of Hollywood Royalty is Fascinating to say the least; and in many ways....Historic.

I began my Interview with Eric at his home in the Inland Empire, in his living room, overlooking the city with mountain and hilltop views. This setting proved most appropriate for a man who has lived the kind of life that Eric has. Surrounding us in his living room were Photographs, momentos, and artwork from Eric's illustrious career in Hollywood. Most of the photos were of the Legendary Lana Turner. It seemed fitting that such a Beautiful Woman with an illustrious career, such as hers, would adorn Eric's living room. Being in Eric's presence, is like being near Lana Turner herself. Eric was Lana's close Confidant, Lover, and "Spiritual Brother" for the last 20-plus years that Lana lived. Here is Eric's Life Story:

I began my interview by asking Eric about how he got his start in The Entertainment Industry; how did it all begin? How did he become "Hair Dresser To The Stars?"

"Well, I originally started out as a Professional Dancer. I performed and collaborated with some of the greats like Arthur Murray. I performed at some of the Top Nightclubs in New York. Somehow, I attracted a lot of attention from big-name Stars and even foreign dignitaries and leaders from other countries. Just as Lana Turner had looked me up some years later, I found myself being sought after in the Entertainment Industry. Keep in mind I was just dancing, but I was attracting attention. Sometimes, from people I didn't care to attract--like The Mafia. I had more than one Mafia guy seeking me out for dating and sexual favor. Ironically, The Mafia would again cross my path with the Stompanato murder involving Lana. And of course I have told part of that story, as Lana asked me too in my Book: "The Private Diary of My Life With Lana."

The Interview went on and I asked Eric how he went from Professional Dancer to "Hair Dresser To The Stars" and his Modeling and other entertainment endeavors. Here is what he had to say:

"Well, the Dancing and Modeling were rising me up pretty quickly. At that time, I was living with a woman who was also my Dance Partner for many of my performances. We were very close. What happened has Haunted me to this day, but I realize now that there was nothing I could have done. She fell in Love with me, and of course, I was not able to return that Love to her. I am not Sexually Oriented to Women. She took it hard, so very hard and she jumped to her death from the 13th floor of where we were living. Her death traumatized me. I blamed myself and I quit everything and moved back to Michigan. I was beside myself with grief and I just didn't want to perform anymore. Something like that can really change a person and how they view the World and others, ya know?"

"So I took a period of time and just contemplated. At some point, I decided that I wanted to still work in the Entertainment Industry, but as a Hair Dresser. I was in the same class as Vidal Sassoon during the early seventies. In fact, one day I got a call from Sassoon's attorney's claiming I was using one of his slogans. The Slogan was actually mine, but these things happen sometimes in any business. I didn't pursue it because my interests were more providing all the Stars with impeccable Hair and Makeup. I became so incredibly busy with providing Hair and Makeup for so many huge-name Stars. I was providing my Hair and Makeup skills to the likes of Lana Turner, Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo--yes...Garbo--Hedy Lamar, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Paul Newman. The list of Stars and even politicians that sought me out was just incredible. I lavished my Clients with State of the Art Hair Styles that were trendsetters as well. I became personal friends with Rose Kennedy and created Jack and Jackie's Signature Hairstyles. I don't say this to boast, but that is what I did and I relished 'The Life.' Anybody who was anybody was seeking out my Skills for Hair and Makeup. I have always been Thankful that I was a part of that world back then . However, there were some very dark and sinister periods."

At this point, I asked Eric to expound on what he meant by 'Dark and Sinister.'

"The Manson Murders. I was supposed to be there. It was a Birthday party for myself and all the other August Birthday people. Sharon Tate really wanted me to be there. I had to decline because I was in Chicago with some very famous client's. I sent my friend Jay Sebring in my place--one of Manson's victims. Believe me, I felt terrible. I realize now that there was nothing in my power to change what happened. But back then, I just felt guilty--almost like Survivor's Guilt. There has been wide speculation that Manson was there to murder Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son. Manson was furious that Terry had at first (Terry was a successful Musician and Music Producer) liked Manson's Singing Talent and Band; but then later had second thoughts due to Manson's behavior and 'God-Like' control over his followers. It frightened Terry. Terry was supposed to be at that party that night. If I recall correctly, I think Terry owned that house and was renting it or sold it to Sharon Tate--something like that. But the theory is that Manson wanted to pay Terry back for not giving the go-ahead to Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) to Sign Manson for a Record Deal. Brian and Terry worked together on a lot of Record Deals and other Music-related projects." they were very successful."

"I don't know why, but there has been other tragic events in my life that have been related to Celebrity and Hollywood. The Lana Clarkson murder is another tragedy that crossed paths with my own life. Lana Clarkson was a very good friend of mine. I had introduced her to Lana Turner, and she was thrilled. Lana Clarkson was named after Lana Turner. We remained friends through the years. She called me just four days prior to being murdered. She called to get my opinion of a man {Phil Spector} that was planning on coming to her work and promising a Movie Deal for her. I told Lana that I just didn't know what to tell her--I didn't know Phil Spector. Four Days later she was murdered. That hit me rather hard."

I then asked Eric what was one of the events or people other than Lana Turner that really stood out in his mind:

" Well, back in the very early 1970's I used to go to a High-end Nightclub in Miami Beach--it was on 20th Street, called the Mayflower. Back then Gay Clubs were all the rage and that's where everyone wanted to be. Well one night, there was some type of a scuffle that attracted my attention. Some guy had stumbled into the Club and was slightly..shall we say...drunk. He began to get into an argument with the Bartender. The guy had parked his motorcycle in a spot he should not have and the Bartender was yelling at him to move it. The argument was escalating into a fight, so for whatever reason, my friend and I stepped in and tried to calm things down. Somehow it worked and the guy took off. Later that evening a very sultry-looking waitress approached us. She explained that the drunk guy was her Son, and she thanked us for preventing a fight. As it turns out, he had actually just dropped off his Mother to start her shift at the club. She offered us drinks, on-the house. As we are talking, this waitress is looking at me and she says: "Daaw-ling...you should be in the Movies." I was very flattered and I asked what her name was. She told me "Veronica." Not knowing who she was but not quiet able to hear above the music, I said to her "Veronica.?" She said "Yes...Daaaw-ling." Then just to make sure I heard correct I said " Oh...Veronica...as in Veronica Lake. " To my surprise she then said: "Daaaw-ling... I AM Veronica Lake." And with that, we ended up being friends. I soon found out why this Screen Legend was working as a waitress in a nightclub. First, Veronica became bitter against Hollywood at a very early state in her career. Nobody ever really figured out why, exactly. She just turned her back on Hollywood one day and didn't want to make movies anymore. Secondly, she had a drinking problem. I used to drive her home night after night from the club. She was just too wasted to drive. Her drinking got so bad that I just couldn't be around her anymore. It's very sad. She died not too long after that. Another sadness was Rita Hayworth. She drank heavily, and started to suffer from dementia. I arrived one day at her home to do her hair and she did not recognize me. She started chasing me around the grounds of her Estate thinking I was an intruder. It was very sad. She did not handle the Retardation of her child very well, and it's pretty well known that that's what started her to drink."

At this point in the Interview, I asked Eric about one of his most famous client's, Lana Turner.

"Well, as you know Diesmond, Lana was much more than a Client. We were really Bonded in a very special way. Lana actually sought me out, as so many were, at that time--due to my work. Lana was performing in a play at the time {1971} and there was a write up about me in one of the Papers--Chicago Tribune I think. I was heading up Hair and Makeup for Imagnin {one of the most prominent department stores that catered to The Rich and Famous, at that time). Imagnin had sent me out to 'make the rounds' at Celebrity events, parties and after parties for many of New York's and Chicago's most successful plays. Here enters Lana. I was invited to attend an after party for a play (a very successful play) called '40 Carots' in which Lana was the Principle Lead...well, Star really. She was a Big-Name Star of the Screen who was given the Principle Lead Role for 40 Carots. In addition to her Beauty and Talent, her name attached to the Play only lent success on top of success. Lana basked in the glow of her success and she deserved it. She really did. Lana was very dedicated to her Craft, both on-screen and off. It is still common knowledge of anyone who knew her that: 'she was a Star's Star'...at all times. The Public expected this from her and she did not disappoint. Anyway, so I'm at this after party for 40 Carots, and a man approaches me--her personal secretary at that time--and was inquiring on Lana's behalf, to come and meet her. I accepted. This person who was her secretary would come to play quite a role in my life. A role that was not welcomed. Lana ended up firing him several years later, and I was blamed. That whole story is in my Book. Anyway, Lana liked my 'Look' and thought I looked like her Father. That was the beginning of a quarter century of countless Life Experiences that I've had the privilege of having." Everything from being featured with Lana for the show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" to quite evenings alone together to Thanksgiving Dinners with her daughter Cheryl, to Christmas with just her and I. Each one is a cherished memory, and as you keep telling me, Diesmond...Historical. I guess you are right, but at the time, I was just living this Wonderful life and Lana was so much a part of it."

I then asked Eric about the Stompanato Murder (Good Friday 1958) . Johnny Stompanato (Lana's Lover) was murdered by Knife wound. Lana's teen daughter Cheryl was accused of the crime and speculation still exists over who actually killed Johnny Stompanato. Here is what Eric told me:

"Well, I wrote about that in my Book. Ya know, it's sometimes very difficult for me. Especially when the Book first came out. I was called a liar and I even had my life threatened. But it's in my Book: Lana told me to tell the truth. And that truth she told me was that she was the one who killed Stompanato. There are some issues surrounding Good Friday 1958 that I cannot reveal. But what I can reveal, is in the Book I wrote about my life with Lana. Speculation still swirls around that day. What a lot of people presume is that all of the Powers that be--The Studio, Attorneys, and others-- started certain motions into play to protect Lana. Back then, there were no "battered-wife" laws and Lana, if convicted , would have probably been given the death penalty. It's speculated that blame had to be put on Lana's daughter. Cheryl was officially accused of the crime. Stompanato had beaten, threatened, and stalked Lana. One of his threats to her was that he would slice and scar her face so there would be no more Movie-making for her. There is also substantial speculation that Stompanato was having sex with Lana's teenage daughter, Cheryl; just as Lex Barker was accused of. Lana did Love Stompanato, at one time--in the beginning--until she found out he was a small-time Mafia Hoodlum. He had a reputation for preying on wealthy women and even men. He wanted the fame and glory that Lana lived in. As I've written, Lana wanted me to tell the World, after she was gone. I did...and I paid a price for it. But still, nothing can ever break the Bond that Lana and I had...it is just too strong...and I carried out her wishes."

I wanted to know more about Eric's current life so I asked him: "Eric...tell me about you today...what is your life like?" Here is Eric's response:

"I still have my Salon, and I'm still doing Hair and Makeup for some famous folks. However, most of my Clients that I see are by private appointment at their home. I still have not lost that desire to lavish my Clients and make them look the best they can be. One new thing I'm working on is a Documentary or Movie based on my life and all that I have experienced. I'm excited about it because there is still so much more that I have lived and not talked about. I also feel that some of the experiences I've had might hopefully inspire and maybe even lend credence to Hollywood History. Sometimes, when I look back on my life, I just can't hardly believe that I experienced so much with so many famous people. I didn't realize it back then, Diesmond...but as you are always telling me...I guess I'm more apart of Hollywood History than I realize. My life has generated a lot of interest just by the sheer nature of what I have lived; and not just people who love the Golden Age of Film. I'm very much living in the Modern World, but as they say: "Some things never change ." I do get a little taken back when certain Big-name Producers contact me wanting to do my Life-story. If I do find the right Vehicle and People to do my Life Story, I just want the thing to be Truthful...but also entertaining. {Laughs}...I don't want to bore anyone. But one thing is for sure..my life has been anything but boring."
