Galloping Goose Trail, Colorado

The Galloping Goose trail is a Nordic skiers paradise offering footbridges, trestles, and historic landmarks along the way of the pristine San Juan Mountains.

While the locals call it the Galloping Goose Trail, the Telluride Nordic Association (TNA), which maintains about three miles forsnowshoeing and cross-country skiing, refers to it as the Trout Lake Rail Road Grade. Year after year it receives more snow than any other Nordic trail in the area. It is common for this trail to have an 80-inch base and as warm weather begins to punch through this trail remains the last skiable trail in the area. So, if you love tocross-country ski or snowshoe, prime trail time is between the months of October and April. The rest of the year this dirt-surfaced trail is ideal for backpacking, hiking, and mountain biking.

One the ways to access this trail is from the top of Lizard Head Pass on Highway 145 between Rico and Ophir. There is ample safe parking and restrooms are available at the U.S. Forest Service rest station. Driving directions from Telluride, travel south on Hwy 145 to the parking lot; if from Dolores head north on Hwy 145 past Rico to the parking lot at Lizard Head Pass. The trailhead is on the east side of the highway, with the Wilson Peaks of the San Juan Mountains providing the backdrop. You will ski or snowshoe almost three miles of downhill east-by-northeast direction to a trestle historically used by the Galloping Goose train. Do not let these peaks take your breath away as you will need it for the return trip that starts at an elevation of 9,631 feet at the trestle and ends at the Pass at 10,267 feet. As an after mention, there are otherNordic Trails in the area, such as the Priest Lake Trails, located a few miles north of Lizard Head Pass and are also on the east side of Hwy 145. The trailhead is at the Forest Service facility past the Matterhorn campground. This 5-to 10km groomed trail recommended for classic skiing because the trails are narrow. Also located nearby on Hwy 145 is Alta Lakes Trails, north of Priest Lake, here you will find 10-km of groomed trails awaiting the intermediate and advanced Nordic skier. Alta Lakes is approximately 8-miles south of the Telluride Ski Resort.

If you are seeking a Nordic skiing experience at a novice level you can pick up the Galloping Goose trail at the Lawson Hill trailhead located in the town of Telluride. The section of trail is the most heavily used segment because of its single track, out-and-back route. This portion of the Galloping Goose is very well marked so you will not get side tracked as you make your way along the trail gazing at the breathtaking mountain views.
