Newcomer Winehouse Makes US Chart History

Amy Winehouse has made US music chart history. Back to Black, her first album to be released in the US, entered the US Billboard chart at number seven.

Back to Black is her first album to be released in the US and entered the US Billboard chart at number seven. This makes Winehouse the highest debuting British female artist on the US album charts.

Her rise to fame in the US music scene began at the start of the year playing shows at a small pub in New York. She then made an appearance on the David Letterman show along with playing bigger shows in New York.

When she heard the news, she said ""You're kidding...that's unbelievable. I'm really proud of this record."

Winehouse, thrilled by her impressive US debut, celebrated by hugging Courtney Love. She was also invited by Bruce Willis to play his birthday party, which she declined.

Winehouse was recently at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, where she was one of the main attractions. The 23 year old performer had already gained much fame and success back home in the United Kingdom, where she has already topped the charts with Back to Black. She also won a Brit Award for best British female solo artist.

Monday night at the Roxbury, when two other SXSW acts from Blightly, the Fratellis and Bloc Party were also in town, Winehouse stole the show.

Winehouse was backed by a nine-piece ensemble that included an instrumental quartet, a trio of horn players, and two male backup singers. Her set played like a full-scale soul revue. In the center of it all, Winehouse's voice was impressive.

Rolling Stone magazine has been plugging calling Winehouse as one of their top 10 artists to watch. Rolling Stone used the equation "(Aretha Franklin x Janis Joplin) - Food = Amy Winehouse" to get their point across.

Winehouse's success in the US comes on the heels of her huge popularity in the UK, which included last month's Brit Awards where she was named Best British Female Artist. She also performed her hit song "Rehab."

Back to Black is currently sitting at number ten in the UK album chart after 18 weeks and is near triple platinum status.

In related British music news, the on-again, off-again drama of the possible Spice Girls reunion was given more juice by ex Spice Girl Mel C., who said ""I've spoken to all the girls and, yes, we'll do a one-off reunion for a big-enough occasion or cause."
