How to Change a Tire on a Bandsaw

When your bandsaw blade slips or jumps the wheel you may need to change the tire. This is how I do it.

A bandsaw tire is the rubber liner around the wheels of a bandsaw. Newer tires may be made from urethane.

Bandsaw tire purpose is to protect the metal wheel, the blade and provide traction to move the blade.

With that out of the way I'll tell you why I need to change bandsaw tires. The newer bandsaw in the shop has been sold. A long time ago I bought some bandsaws at an IRS auction. The three on the patio are all that's left. I'm giving a 600 pound 20 inch bandsaw to my brother to go with his new lumber mill. Ah yes-he's kind of a tool junkie as well. I will rebuild an 18 inch bandsaw and find a place in the shop for it. I've already rebuilt a heavy cast iron 14 inch bandsaw except for the tires. The 14" bandsaw will replace the bandsaw I sold. It's a much better saw anyway.

What kind of tire to use? In the old days I would buy a rubber tire, or cut a strip of relatively hard rubber or belting and glue it around the wheel. The factory rubber tires might need to be glued or not. I guess it was a matter of karma. I have made adequate tires using old inner tubes from trucks or cars. The choices today are still rubber tires or newer urethane tires. Rubber tires would probably last as long as I'm going to live but I wanted to try the urethane tires. I suspected the urethane tires were exactly the same material we used in various industrial and commercial drive processes. I was right.

Measure the wheel before you order. I have what you would call a traditional 14" bandsaw but the wheel measures 1 X 13 ½ inches. The new tire may seem a bit short and wide but it will stretch. As it stretches in length it narrows slightly in width.

Clean the wheel after you remove the old tire. I use fairly fine emery cloth.

To install the urethane tire soak it in hot water for about 10 minutes. Place the tire on the wheel and hold it in place with a clamp. Stretch the wheel about half way around and add another clamp. I use fingers only and continue to stretch the tire around the wheel until it fits on the wheel. Use a round blade screwdriver to help if needed. A helper is nice to have, but certainly not necessary. I change tires with the wheels on the bandsaw, but you can remove them if necessary. To help seat the urethane wheel and balance stresses in the stretched urethane run a round blade screwdriver all the way around underneath the belt. Wait several hours until the wheels cool and you're ready to go.

The wife is happy with the clean patio. I'm happy with the new tire.
