Aphids, Birds and Yellowjackets

Some of the worst garden and backyard pests - aphids, birds and yellowjackets - can easily be gotten rid of naturally. Here are three ways to do that.

You may have heard a soap spray will get rid of aphids? It will. We're not just giving them a free bath. The soap film clogs their pores, and they can't breathe. Regular liquid dish soap will do the trick. Don't use too much, or you'll burn your plants. Figure no more than two ounces per gallon of water. Use a gentle, hand-pump sprayer so a strong spray won't damage your plants. Along with asphyxiating these pests, it will also wash them off your plants. This is good not just for aphids, but thrips, psyllids and mites, too.

Birds are next on our list. They love to come along and peck just-planted seeds out of your garden. It's easy for them to get used to a scarecrow, even if aluminum pie plates have been attached to it to give it motion and noise. This method involves planting your seeds in as straight a row as you can, then, pound a stake into the ground at each end of the row, and string black or brown thread over your plantings. The birds land, try to peck the seeds out and hit the thread. Apparently, they can't see it and get frustrated by this "invisible" barrier over your seeds. They won't be hurt. They'll just have to fly off somewhere else for their meal.

Last: yellowjackets. Besides annoying you when you try to eat outdoors, they can also give a nasty sting. Let nature take care of them. When you find an underground yellowjacket nest, the old way was to pour gasoline down the hole and set fire to it. Pretty dangerous and not good for the ecology of your soil. Better: leave a deposit of aromatic horse feed or suet at the mouth of the nest. At night, neighborhood wildlife, skunks, opossums and raccoons will be drawn to the bait, and, finding the yellowjacket nest, will dig it out and save you the trouble. Let them get stung. Nests destroyed in this manner aren't usually re-built by the pests. Source: "Organic Gardening" magazine.
