Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog
A review of Justin Timberlake's performance in Alpha Dog
Alpha Dog is a movie adaptation of a true crime that happened in the Hollywood Hills, a crime that was committed by Jesse James Hollywood. In Alpha Dog Jesse James is Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch) who is a local drug dealer who is owed money by Jake Mazursky (Ben Foster). To force Jake to pay his debt Johnny and his goons Frankie Ballenbacher (Timberlake) and Elvis Schmidt (Shawn Hatosy) kidnap Jake's kid brother Zack (Anton Yelchin). At first Zack is treated like one of the guys, he is taken to parties, introduced to girls, having a great time. Little does he know that this all is going to change and Johnny Truelove found that he faces life in prison if Zack escapes? He orders Elvis and Frankie to take care of the situation.
Timberlake has a big role in Alpha Dog, which kind of surprised me; I expected a small part just to pad ticket sales. I think this was a breaking out performance for Timberlake, he did an amazing job, he was funny, serious, and dramatic. You can at times see his in-experience show but that is expected with a new actor. Timberlake sold me on Frankie Ballenbacher and I hope to see him in more movies down the road. I wasn't even a Timberlake fan and when I heard he was in Alpha Dog I said well another singer turned crappy actor, but he has surprised me.
This was Timberlake's first big role in a major motion picture and he knocked it out of the ballpark. I could see him even being the lead in a movie in the next 3 to 5 years. Timberlake also had a voice part in Shrek the Third as Artie, I haven't seen it but I am assuming he will do another great job.
You can also catch Justin Timberlake in the film Black Snake Moan, where he plays a character named Ronnie. Black Snake Moan features Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci in a movie about a farmer who chains up a wild young woman Rae (Ricci) to save her from her promiscuous ways. Timberlake plays the anxiety prone boyfriend of Rae, haven't seen the movie yet but expect Timberlake will deliver another great performance. Check it out on DVD June 26th this summer.
