How to Get Started Teaching Clinical Psychology

How to get started in teaching at the university level.

First, choose a textbook that covers the material you would like to discuss in your clinical psychology class. The textbooks you have to select from will have a big effect on how you structure your class, so choose wisely. You may want to pick one clinical psychology textbook plus one or two supplementary materials, like workbooks, clinical psychology journals or case studies on clinical methods.

Next, contact local counseling centers to try to arrange internship opportunities. If it's possible for your students to shadow a clinical psychologist as part of their coursework, that will give hands-on experience that will enhance their learning. If you yourself are a practicing psychologist, you may choose to have them shadow you at your own office.

Create assignments for your clinical psychology students. You can include a structured experiment to teach research methods in clinical psychology. Additional activities may include essays on theories and group projects focused on counseling methods. Try to select a variety of assignments for your students. Different people have different learning styles, and the variety can help reinforce the material better.

Plan group discussions to get your students talking. In a clinical psychology class, it's important to teach good group leadership skills as well as listening skills since these are integral to the vocation. You may also want to give personality assessments to your class and have them practice evaluating and discussing results.

Write out a lesson plan or a schedule of what you'd like to teach on which days. Create a syllabus that tells your clinical psychology students what you'll be teaching as well as how to contact you and general rules for class. Clinical psychology students tend to be an intelligent bunch so be ready to answer any questions.
