Soldiers Returning Home to Half-Rate Helath Care!

When our soldiers return from war, they are forced to struggle through a maze of medical paperwork before receiving inadequate care.

Former GOP Senator Bob Dole of Kansas says there are at least nine teams of congressional members working on the problems with the healthcare system daily. Reports of improper veteran health care and some of the worst conditions and outpatient treatments to date, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, seems to have sparked the debate and investigation. Dole claims, "This is not going to be a witch hunt."

With more and more soldiers coming home every day, the timeline for the investigating commission to report solid findings is a brief one. Donna Shalala, the health and human resources secretary for former President Bill Clinton assures the report will be completed in a timely manner. "Our timeline for action is short." However, due to the short timeline, commissioners will not be able to visit every hospital on their agenda.

Jose Ramos feels the reform is overdue and understands why the investigation is so needed. After having to wait four hours before a doctor's appointment every visit, he would be forced to "re-explain [his] symptoms and medical history. It was like starting all over again every time [he] had an appointment."

Ramos, who lost an arm while serving in the armed forces, believes the VA system is just as fouled. "The VA system, much like the military medical out processing system, is a labyrinth of offices and paperwork that no one seems to want to help with."

Spouses of military service people are hoping the commission can fix a system that has undoubtedly let down the people they love the most. "I have watched several marriages fall apart because the spouses did not receive the emotional support necessary to help them through such a challenging time," says Tammy Edwards, wife of a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant who was severely burned while serving in Iraq.

Once the commission finalizes their report on this topic, it is believes they will then need to start investigating the system used to rate disabilities for government payments.
