The courses taken for a clinical psychology degree are all focused on preparing an individual to become a competent clinical psychologist. Skills Required in Clinical Psychology

Clients may be argumentative, demanding or unstable and clinical psychologists need to be able and prepared to deal with this. Those with a doctorate degree with have the most employment opportunities. There is an expected growth of 12 percent in employment opportunities through 2018. This increase comes from a demand for psychological services in hospitals, mental health centers, consulting firms, schools, social service agencies, substance abuse treatment clinics and private companies. Those with only a Bachelor's degree will find only limited opportunities. In May 2020, school, counseling and school psychologists were earning a median annual salary of $64,140. Those earning this median salary mostly worked in a state government, individual and family services, other health practitioner offices, outpatient care centers and secondary and elementary schools.

In several U.S. states a doctoral degree is required to practice as an independent clinical psychologist. Those who hold a Master's degree in this field would be able to work as a mental health researcher or counselor, but supervised by a licensed clinical psychologist.
