AACAP Offers More Structured Guidelines for Diagnosing and Treating ADHD
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has outlined screening and treatment parameters for ADHD.
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, AACAP, has recently developed new guidelines by which psychiatrists are recommended to diagnosis, screen and treat children and teenagers with ADHD. With these guidelines, the AACAP is focusing on public awareness and guiding the medical community into the realm of not only diagnosing ADHD but also focusing on the possibilities of co-morbid complications.
In many children with ADHD, there is a risk for co-morbid complications involving Oppositional Defiant disorder as well as Conduct disorder. Without proper diagnosis and management of these co-morbidities, your teen may eventually develop a substance abuse complication. In addition, there is a risk for speech and language deficiencies and the development of anxiety disorders into adulthood.
Under the guidelines established by the AACAP, children who show positive screenings for ADHD are advised to undergo evaluation. As part of the evaluation, children with speech, language, or any other intellectual deficit should be referred for neurological evaluation in addition to psychological evaluation. The key with this type of assessment lies in the need to differentiate ADHD from other neurological or developmental complications.
Once ADHD has been confirmed, and no other neurological complication exists, the AACAP recommends that children with ADHD begin on medication therapy with close monitoring of side effects and management symptoms over the long term. When symptoms of ADHD persist, even in the course of medication use, or the presence of a co-morbid complication is confirmed, psychotherapy is also necessary.
The AACAP has also outlined the parameters for medication management of ADHD indicating each child should undergo vital sign evaluation two to four times per year with height, weight and blood pressure a primary focus.
If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, or is suspected of suffering from ADHD, it is important to understand what the AACAP recommends for treatment of children living with this complication. Because neurological complications and co-morbidities are quite common, your child should be evaluated thoroughly before medication is initiated. With persistent medication management, in collaboration with psychotherapy, your child's ADHD can be well managed under these American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry guidelines.
