The Wall Recorder

It Records Sounds, it Records Sounds in the Walls; Any Walls

"Shhhhhhhhhzzzzzzzzzzz. Woooooiiiiiiizzzzzzshhh. Woooiiiiiiizzzzzzzshhhh."

A hushing sound came up and down the monitor. There was nothing understandable. The screen showed all kinds of noises in a chart which move up and down like in a life support machine, but the program was taking its time to separate the words, the sounds or anything trapped in it. The inventor had not forgotten any details: the sound of footsteps, slamming of doors, the opening and closing of the windows, the wind; but especially any words, and any human noises. Suddenly, the computer stopped. There was something recorded in the program. The inventor pressed the key and played the word.

"No".

The sound was clear. It was a monosyllable word. He restarted the machine one more time and scanned the wall in a different direction. The computer stopped again and this time, the inventor let any noises to come out of the machine. There were sounds of people laughing loudly, the playful sound of kids running up and down the stairs, the melodic sound of a Charleston orchestra and the sound of people chatting and dancing. It was as if the house was haunted, but it wasn't, it was a recording from the past; the machine had finally worked.

It was not clear how it worked. The theory was that voices were trapped within the walls as houses were been built. Somehow static energy built up by storms, especially dry storms with wind and lightning, but no rain, worked as a conductor of sounds through the walls. The inventor remembered what his uncle and grand father used to tell him as a child:

"Don't say that because walls have ears and a mind of their own."

The Scientist never ending hunger for knowledge made him come up with a crazy idea:

"What if a machine could make the walls talk?"

He had spent half of his life building it, and finally all of those years of sacrifice alone in his laboratory, had paid off. The inventor ran the machine one more time, this time he pointed it into a small room, a living room. The lasers filled the walls with their red light which spread to every corner, and every small part of the ceiling. Then, the first sentence was played back:

"Don't do it!"

A gun shot was heard.

"Poom."

Then silence. The scientist was puzzled at what he had just heard. There was a murder committed in this house, but when? That was the question. He had discovered that a terrific crime had been done. His machine could be used for so many purposes. It could be used for archaeological research, police investigation, or even adultery. However, now that he had actually discovered a use for it, would they believe him? The house had been there since the end of the civil war. So many people had lived and died there. It did not matter when or how, what it matter was that it was a murder and he had a recording of it.

It was an empty house which was going to be torn down. He had asked the owner for permission to do his experiments. The house had stairs running down from a second floor. It had a corridor and seven big rooms. It was one of the last Victorian houses left in the community; the other ones were long time gone. Something strange about this house was that it also had a huge basement. National City was a small town in San Diego and it was not very common to see a house with basement in this part of Southern California. This is why he had chosen this house, a house looking down the hill; looking down the cemetery. His original plan was not to look for ghosts or anything like that. He did not exactly believe on them, even though he had seen and heard things. His idea was that it was electric energy which stayed in a place where someone had died, what caused most of the activity. The energy could be turned into images and sounds in a theory. Therefore, ghostly sounds and images were energy released after someone had died.

This energy reminded trapped in the place until something or someone with a strong receptive energy could perceive it and release it. Some people work as natural receptors, like an antenna and are able to perceive this energy and see shapes and sounds that are not really there, just like in a hologram.

Holograms are projections of people who were prerecorded in the past, so when a hologram is projected it seems that they are really there in front of us. For example, Tupac's hologram was projected in a concert. People enjoyed the presence of their idol one more time, even thought he was already dead. This is why some people think they are seeing a ghost whenever they see this energy been released. That explained what people had seen and heard so many times. The inventor had always listened to their stories, especially the ones from his uncle Pablin down south in Guanajuato, Mexico:

"I saw La Llorona walking down the street, and vanishing in mid-air."

Was it a ghost? No, the inventor's scientific knowledge contradicted his philosophical side. God had created Adam and Eve, but at the same time, evolution had turned Adam from God's image into an ape. Then his hairy natural dress was gone after biting from the forbidden fruit, the apple tree; the tree of knowledge. The inventor's religious side told him about the soul, the inner spirit, but his years of Physics and Chemistry at school and later University, told him a different story.

He had mastered Calculus, Linear Algebra, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Radio and Ultra Magnetic Wave Research. He had studied in the best Universities of the world: Cambridge, Tokyo, Harvard, Yale. He had known them all. He had studied acoustic sounds, and had traveled to Arizona and New Mexico to study SETI Radio waves, he was there when the "Wow!" signal was received from space at Ohio in '77, and had done research for NASA at Texas and Florida. Now, his exit exam was there in front of him. His lonely days without a home, without a family of his own, had paid off.

Everything came up to this object that he had created. Doctor Frankenstein had given birth to his ultimate master piece, a mechanical brain which could talk, one which had a life of its own.
