'Ip Man 2' Sees Donnie Yen's Return as Martial Arts Master

Donnie Yen proves once again he's a fantastic Hong Kong action star in the sequel to 2020's "Ip Man."

The second film details Ip Man's struggles to maintain a school in Hong Kong as China rebuilds from World War II during Hong Kong's British occupation in 1950. Ip Man struggles against the Brits as they mistreat citizens and form gangs to maintain order. The martial arts master teaches more students to overcome adversity with his fighting style.

Eventually, Ip Man takes on a young student named Bruce Lee who would arguably eclipse his master when he founded his own style of martial arts known as Jeet Kune Do.

First Movie

The first movie, "Ip Man," came out in 2020 and was done by the same creative team. Wilson Yip (no relation) directed Donnie Yen in a movie which was biographical but also more intense dramatically than the real Ip Man's life.

In war-torn Foshan, Ip Man stands up to Japanese occupation using Wing Chung kung fu to defend himself and his people. With lots of hand-to-hand combat and a will to overcome oppression, Ip Man successfully frees his village from Japanese tyranny.

Set in 1938, the first "Ip Man" movie set up the world of Red China as a backdrop for lots of kung fu action in the sequel.

Historical Background

A biography of Ip Man reveals how his early life led him to Hong Kong in the first place. He fled mainland China to escape the communist revolution after World War II and then settled in Hong Kong. After several failed attempts, Ip Man finally got another master to teach him and became an eminent master himself when several students won martial arts tournaments.

Ip Man died at a very old age in 1972 but not before passing on his skills to two sons and other masters. You can still find practitioners of Wing Chun all over the world thanks to one man who escaped from the Chinese countryside to Hong Kong.

"Ip Man 2" is rated R for violence, just like its original. Donnie Yen is one of my favorite martial artists in movies as he can also be seen in "Hero" and "Blade II" with Wesley Snipes. The second film is much like the first only with more enemies to confront and more martial arts fights. Either way, seeing Yen and his co-star Sammo Hung go at it on a table top is a great thing to watch.
