How to Purchase Digital Piano Keyboards
5 Great Places to purchase professional and hobby level digital piano keyboards
If you are in the market for a children's toy, or a good little keyboard to tinker around on, I highly recommend the Casio's and First Act keyboards found in Target and at www.target.com. They range in price from $25.00 for a child's toy to around $400.00 for a great hobbyist digital piano keyboard. The children's toys come with cute pictures, flashing lights, and some built in tunes. The hobbyist keyboards by Casio have some really nice sounds, touch sensitivity, and some fun demos to enjoy. The technology in these keyboards is ever evolving and they often come with some nice percs, such as keyboard stands, headphones, and potentially a metronome. This is a good way to go if you have a child interested in taking piano lessons but you aren't ready to commit to the purchase of an expensive, acoustic piano just yet. You can find similar keyboards at www.walmart.com or in your local Wal-Mart Supercenter.
If you have a budding virtuoso or are a professional musician, you'll want to look for a more high-end type of keyboard. Www.musiciansfriend.com has great prices and regular sales. Their keyboards range from several hundred to several thousand dollars a piece. If the digital piano keyboard is for home use only, you may want to invest in a larger keyboard, such as a Roland with 76 or 88 weighted keys. Musicians' Friend has lots of options for free shipping from their online store.
When investing in such a large purchase, it is always a good idea to try before you buy. I have had great experiences at Sam Ash in King of Prussia, Pa, and George's Music Stores in Lansdale and Spring City, Pa. I was able to go in and try out many different keyboards with a helpful salesperson nearby to answer all my questions. Both of these retailers sell digital piano keyboards that are great for public performances. These keyboards are lightweight, usually come in 66 touch sensitive keys, with a host of sampled sounds. Look for a keyboard that easily transitions from one sound to another if you are going to use it for performances.
Casio, Yamaha, Roland, Kurzweil, and Korg, my personal favorite, are popular professional, digital piano keyboards. A bottom line Casio with a real piano feel will run about $400, while a good Roland or Yamaha will come in around $2000.00, but keep in mind that a professional keyboard does not include an amp, stand, stool, or cables unless the store is offering a special deal.

I would be remiss if I didn't share a few of my best keyboard shopping tips. First, remember to include the cost of an amp, stool, stand, and cables in the budget for your new digital piano keyboard. Take the time to shop around for the best price, and bring some music along with you to get a good feel for the keyboard that you like best. Be prepared to stay for a couple hours to try out plenty of products if you are searching for a professional quality keyboard. If budget is your primary concern, you may want to consider purchasing last year's model. It may not have the latest and greatest gadgets but you will get a lot of bang for your buck. Lastly, always ask if you can have a special deal! You never know when an eager salesperson will throw in an extra mic or cable or even a keyboard case to seal the deal.
