Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 TV Tuner - Personal Video Recorder Review
The Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 is somewhat different from other USB TV tuners in that it has a larger screen, 6.25 square inches.
Stereo audio inputs, composite video and S-Video inputs occupy the front panel of the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2, while the back holds two coaxial connectors (TV and FM radio), a USB 2.0 port and a power connector. The only A/V cables that are included are a USB cable and an FM antenna, which is one area where the Diamond XtremeTV PVR600 tops the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2.
What's more, the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2's remote operates through an internal IR sensor which changes channels, pauses, rewinds, fast-forwards and records, yet can't run the set-top box. Having to purchase a separate IR blaster may be quite a nuisance to some.
You won't have to worry about extra hassle and confusion when installing the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2, though. Each connection is clearly marked, along with its corresponding destination. Ulead's MovieFactory 2 DVD authoring program is found on the disc that comes with it, as well as the software used to watch, record and pause live TV.
WinTV harmonizes with TitanTV's Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for more involved programming options. One complaint though is Hauppauge's lack of intuitiveness. In that respect, the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 just doesn't match up with other programs, such as Windows Media Center.
Although the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 never changed channels unexpectedly, unlike some other tuners, it had audio discrepancies. At times, we heard a disturbing squelching sound as we switched channels. This can be particularly annoying when you turn the volume up higher than usual.
However, the video quality was great, with each reproduction looking every bit as sharp as the original. Also, we got a great direct video signal from our set-top DVD player. Both the audio and video came out well.You won't get much use out of the FM tuner. As great as many of the other features were the FM tuner had trouble just keeping local stations. If you choose the WinTV-PVR-USB2, you'll need an external antenna for FM radio on your computer.
Overall, the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 TV tuner performed quite well. Despite minor background noises on some channels, and a little bit of image softness, the viewing experience went extremely smoothly. Nothing that can't be observed with most PC tuner cards showed up. The Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 is better in video than audio, and may require some extra purchases to meet your specific needs.
